Montserrat Caballe dies at 85

Montserrat Caballe, who took opera into the pop charts by singing "Barcelona" with Freddie Mercury three decades ago, died aged 85 on Saturday.

The Spanish singer died in Sant Pau hospital in the city of Barcelona, staff there said, without giving further details.

Caballe's family has reportedly requested the cause of death not be released, though revealed she had been in hospital since last month.

Spanish media said that Caballe entered the hospital in September because of a gall bladder problem.

During her carrer, Montserrat starred in 90 opera roles with almost 4,000 stage performances.

The Spanish opera singer whose song with Freddie Mercury became the featured single of the Barcelona Olympics has passed away.

She went on to tour the world in a career spanning 50 years, garnering global acclaim for her creamy voice and dramatic power.

Her debut went down in opera history as one of the greatest overnight successes and she went on to tour the world in a career that spanned half a century.

Caballe is survived by her husband, Bernabe Marti, an opera singer whom she married in 1964, and their two children Monsterrat Marti and Bernabe Marti Jr.
