Four people were killed in and around the town of Gros-Morne farther south, local authorities said, including a woman who died from a heart attack suffered after the quake.

Le Nouvelliste newspaper said one person was killed when an auditorium collapsed in Gros-Morne.

Addressing the nation, Prime Minister Jean-Henry Céant told about the formation of a crisis cabinet that would coordinate with all emergency responses to the natural disaster.

The one-two punch of a magnitude 5.9 natural disaster in northern Haiti on Saturday that destroyed houses and killed at least 12 people followed by a strong 5.2 magnitude aftershock on Sunday has residents anxious about returning to their cracked cinderblock homes for fear they will collapse.

An auditorium has reportedly collapsed in the northern part of the country, while a local police station has also been damaged, forcing police to release detainees from custody as a precaution.

The only major damage was a cultural center in Gros Morne that collapsed, Civil Protection said.

The tremor's epicentre was recorded 20 km from Port-de-Pai at a depth of 15.3 km at 8.11 p.m. on Saturday, reports Efe news, according to the US Geological Survey, reported IANS.

Tens of thousands of people are still believed to be displaced as a result.

The agency said damage and injuries were mostly concentrated in the northwest region of the island, where two minor aftershocks were also felt, the agency said.

President Jovenel Moise asked global aid agencies to coordinate with local agencies for better relief operations and urged people to donate blood.

The damage caused was worth an estimated 120 percent of GDP in Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere.
