Still, as part of the response to the incident, Google is planning to shut down the social network permanently.

The company said in a blog on Monday it had discovered and patched the leak in March of this year and had no evidence of misuse of user data or that any developer was aware or had exploited the vulnerability.

Besides low usage, Google+ engagement rates are also defeating, with 90-percent of all sessions lasting for under five seconds, according to Alphabet's subsidiary.

It said, "To give people a full opportunity to transition, we will implement this wind-down over a 10-month period, slated for completion by the end of next August". The flaw exposed user data from 2015 until this past March, according to the report. The Google+ bug that's been discovered and disclosed was located in the Google+ People API. Google explains Strobe as "a root-and-branch review of third-party developer access to Google account and Android device data and of our philosophy around apps' data access". In the wake of the report, Google posted that the breach or potential breach resulted from a bug in an API. Google says they have no evidence that any developer harvested that data and don't show evidence that any even knew the bug existed.

According to Google, data that may have potentially been disclosed only includes "static, optional Google+ Profile fields including name, email address, occupation, gender and age".

The search giant states that it wasn't able to maintain "a successful Google+ product that meets consumers' expectations". The office looks at what data was taken, what affected users need to be informed, if there was any evidence of data abuse, and whether or not users could effectively respond.

A software bug in Google+ meant that the personal information of "hundreds of thousands" of users was exposed.

As for consumers, Google is now promising new security rules and tools to avoid a similar goof again.

And finally, for action 4, Google is going to limit how many apps are allowed to ask for phone and SMS data permissions in Google Play.

What's more, Google says these apps will have to agree to new rules around handling Gmail data and will be subject to 'security assessments'.

Now, users will be given greater control over what account data they choose to share with each app.

'This review crystallized what we've known for a while: that while our engineering teams have put a lot of effort and dedication into building Google+ over the years, it has not achieved broad consumer or developer adoption, and has seen limited user interaction with apps, ' Smith said.

The news comes as Silicon Valley companies have been increasingly scrutinized for their data collection practices.
