  • Microsoft unveils Xbox Project xCloud game streaming

"The test runs on devices (mobile phones, tablets) paired with an Xbox Wireless Controller through Bluetooth, and it is also playable using touch input", Kareem Choudhry, corporate vice president, gaming cloud, said in a blog post. Named Project xCloud, the service is set to enable gamers to play the games they want from any device they want. "Developers of the more than 3,000 games available on Xbox One today, and those building the thousands that are coming in the future, will be able to deploy and dramatically scale access to their games across all devices on Project xCloud with no additional work".

Microsoft's Project xCloud service is in testing.

The service - called xCloud - was hinted at first at E3 2018, but today we've had our first proper info drop on the game. In addition to already existing services like PlayStation Now, Google recently began to test the waters for their own service, Project Stream, with Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Obviously, Project xCloud will roll out first across areas heavily supported by Microsoft Azure, but things should grow each year from there. While game streaming still has some major hurdles to overcome like widespread lackluster internet speeds, Project xCloud definitely seems to be taking steps in the right direction. Versions of Halo, Gears, Forza and Cuphead have all been shown running on a variety of mobile and tablet devices, with public trials due to start in 2019. The company promises that it's working on all fronts to make sure this is a slick experience, including figuring out new ways of carrying out video encoding and decoding. Microsoft says that the core idea behind Project xCloud is allowing console and PC gamers to play on any platform they prefer, while giving people who exclusively game on mobile a deeper experience than they're probably used to. The company is also developing a touch input overlay that "provides maximum response in a minimal footprint for players who choose to play without a controller".

The test experience is now running at 10Mbps, with the company aiming to "deliver high-quality experiences at the lowest possible bitrate that work across the widest possible networks, taking into consideration the uniqueness of every device and network".
