  • 'Where Is Jamal?' Here's What to Know About Missing Washington Post Columnist Jamal Khashoggi

The Washington Post put out a blank column in its Friday edition after the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Saudi Arabia's crown prince insisted the stalled plan to sell shares in oil giant Aramco will go ahead, promising an initial public offering by 2021 and sticking to his ambitious view the state-run company is worth $2 trillion or more, Bloomberg reported on Friday.

He claimed that Khashoggi had left the building not long after he entered earlier this week, alleging, "If he's in Saudi Arabia, I would know that".

His fiancee - who requested anonymity - told the Post she accompanied him but waited outside and called the police when Khashoggi did not emerge after the consulate closed.

His fiance, however, rubbished that claim, pointing out that no-one had seen him - while a spokesman for Turkey's president said Khashoggi remained inside the building and that Turkish officials were in contact with their Saudi counterparts over the situation.

"As we speak today, there [are] Saudi intellectuals and journalists jailed".

Press freedom watchdogs also raised red flags, while the Washington Post, which has regularly featured Khashoggi's writing since a year ago, published a blank space where his column would normally appear. "To do otherwise would betray those who languish in prison. And the Turkish government must assume its role and deal with the case of Jamal Khashoggi because Turkish sovereignty has been violated", she added.

The Crown Prince said his country will privatize more than 20 companies in 2019, helping the government's strategy of diversifying away from oil exports. Canada, they gave an order to Saudi Arabia on an internal issue.

Turkish officials disputed the account of Saudi consulate officials regarding his disappearance.

Eastern Province has been the scene of peaceful demonstrations since February 2011.

Notably, Khashoggi would not be the only Gulf national to have been arrested overseas to be returned to the kingdom, and other incidents have been far more public.

Over the past years, Riyadh has also redefined its anti-terrorism laws to target activism. For instance, Nawaf Talal al-Rasheed, a Qatari national and a cousin of famed Saudi academic and critic Madawi al-Rasheed, was arrested in Kuwait and passed to Saudi authorities "under bilateral mutual security arrangements between Kuwait and Riyadh".
