  • Security guards stand outside the Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul

Turkish media close to the president published images on Wednesday of what it described as a 15-member "assassination squad" allegedly sent to target Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and of a black van later traveling from the Saudi consulate, where he went missing, to the consul's home.

Whether this refers to the new General Directorate for Investigation as part of new Saudi state security departments created past year is unclear. It was unclear from this whether Saudi Arabia wanted to then kill him or arrest him, or if US officials made Khashoggi aware of this, the source said. The video also shows alleged Saudi planes and agents, whom Turkish officials want to investigate in relation to the dissident journalist's disappearance.

The Post elaborated on those accounts in a separate story Tuesday, writing that the Saudi team laid in wait for Khashoggi to enter the consulate.

Turkish police were looking into two private aircraft that landed at Istanbul's Ataturk airport on October 2 at different times carrying the individuals of interest in the case.

RSF, in a statement on its website, highlighted that "more than 15 journalists and bloggers have been arrested in a completely opaque manner in Saudi Arabia since September 2017". Airport security officials now say they checked all bags that the Saudi teams took with them from the consulate to the airport and say there were no suspicious items in any of the items loaded on to the jets for their return journeys to Riyadh. Among them was a forensics expert, it says. The passenger manifest, obtained by the pro-government Daily Sabah paper, also lists a senior intelligence officer and two Saudi air force officers. Turkish officials have alleged he was killed in the compound while Saudis officials said he left the building unharmed. The other to Cairo, also finally to the Saudi capital.

Jamal Khashoggi was once considered an insider to the Saudi establishment with links to the security and intelligence apparatus.

Crown Prince Mohammed's brother and the Saudi ambassador to the US, Prince Khaled bin Salman al-Saud, has insisted all the reports about his disappearance or death "are completely false and baseless".

Hatice Cengiz has appealed to the United States for help in an emotional article in the Washington Post. The two soon agreed to marry, but in order to do so he needed to finalise his divorce with his first wife in Saudi Arabia.

She said the figure in the video pacing outside on the phone and identified as her in the video could show her as she frantically made calls to try to find Khashoggi, but she cannot be sure.

Saudi Arabia has remained silent as the images have played across television networks in Turkey and around the world.
