As we mentioned at the outset, Microsoft has been busy tackling a file deletion bug with the big update, and right now the rollout has been paused because this is a major potential worry, obviously enough.
After some users complained that installing the Windows 10 October update has been wiping off their data, Microsoft last week put a halt to the availability of the update (version 1809).
Microsoft missed the bug despite users filing reports in its Feedback Hub, since the number of total reports of file deletion was too low to trigger a quicker response by its engineers.
"Prior to re-releasing the October 2018 Update our engineering investigation determined that a very small number of users lost files during the October 2018 Update", stated the Microsoft announcement. While the reports of actual data loss are few (one one-hundredth of one per cent of version 1809 installs), any data loss is serious. However, it appears to affect files from Documents, Pictures, and other folders. You create "D:\documents" and change the location of the files known folder from the original "old" location c:\users\username\documents to D:\documents. Alternatively, you can manually download these files from Microsoft Update Catalog.
The user configured one or more of their Known Folders (Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Screenshots, Videos, Camera Roll, etc.) to be redirected (KFR) to another folder (device drive, external drive or a OneDrive folder).

As the October 2018 update was only made available for customers who actively checked for updates in Windows Update, the company says that "the number of customers taking the October 2018 update was limited". So I'm following Woody's Defcon numbering system with regards to any Windows Updates and waiting to let others be the BETAs that Bleed!
However, if you're somebody who wants to keep hold of the files they've downloaded for whatever reason, or uses the folder for storage in some way, then obviously this is something you need to be careful around if you're using Disk Cleanup.
As for users that were affected, the firm says that "Microsoft Support is assisting customers and trying to recover data" and that this support can also be offered by the retail support services in-store.
#WindowsInsiders If you've run into the "missing files after update" issue for 1809/October 2018 Fall update, please call our support line.
