Pakistan vs Australia: Dubai witnesses a rare instance in Test cricket

  • Tim Paine leads Australia into their first Test series since the ball-tampering affair erupted in South Africa in March

The off-spinner (6-36) ripped through the Baggy Greens' middle order after seamer Mohammad Abbas (4-29) had ended a first-wicket partnership of 142 between Usman Khawaja (85) and Aaron Finch (62) by having the latter caught brilliantly by Asad Shafiq at short mid-on.

When Day One of the first Test between Pakistan and Australia went underway in Dubai on Sunday, a rare instance in Test cricket was witnessed in which the captains of both the teams - Sarfraz Ahmed and Tim Paine -were wicketkeepers.

"We need seven more wickets so, God willing, we will get them and get this win for which we have worked very hard and it will be good to take a lead in the series".

Finch's wicket opened the floodgates and Khawaja too fell soon.

Two balls later Abbas had the elder Marsh caught behind and in his next over trapped Mitchell right in front of the stumps only to get the decision on review.

Pakistan bowled out Australia for 222-runs.

Part-time legspinner Marnus Labuschagne claimed his second wicket for the match on debut, dismissing first-innings centurion Harris Sohail (39) lbw with a delivery which pitched well outside the line but spun sharply and crashed into his box.

"I can't explain how happy I am to score my first Test hundred", Sohail said.

In their second innings, Pakistan were reduced to 45/3 at the close of play on Day 3 as they stretched their overall lead to 325.

The veteran Mohammad Hafeez (126) and Imam-ul- Haq (76) had put Pakistan in command on the first day with their 205-run opening partnership.

Sohail's patient six-hour knock featured eight fours and two sixes, as he added 150 for the fifth wicket with Shafiq who was unlucky to miss out on his 10th century.

Left-arm spinner Jon Holland removed Hafeez for 17 in the 13th over before nightwatchman Asif was sent back for a duck by off-spinner Nathan Lyon.
