  • Ballon d'Or LIVE updates- Bale and Aguero among first nominees

The victor of the prestigious award organised by France Football magazine will be announced on December 3.

Modric, a World Cup runner-up with Croatia, beat Juventus' Ronaldo and Salah to win the Federation Internationale de Football Association prize last month after Messi was surprisingly left off the final three-man list.

The first five Ballon d'Or nominees have been named and a number of Premier League players feature prominently on the list.

Alisson is also among the Reds contingency, though he joined in the summer, while Paul Pogba is the only Manchester United nominee.

The Tottenham striker captained England to their first World Cup semi-final in 28 years in Russian Federation this summer.

Griezmann won the World Cup with France, finishing as the man of the match in the final and he also finished as the Europa League's best player with a brace in the final.

Five-time victor Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Antoine Griezmann lead the shortlist for football's most prestigious individual prize, while Kylian Mbappe is the standout in the race for the new Kopa Trophy for young players.

The likes of Luis Suarez, Sergio Ramos, N'Golo Kante and Eden Hazard have yet to get off the mark in terms of percentage of votes cast, while the FIFA "Best" award victor Luka Modric has also struggled for fan votes. "However, I believe that a Frenchman must win the Ballon d'Or".

Real Madrid midfielder Isco, Liverpool's Brazilian Roberto Firmino and Uruguay's rugged defender Diego Godin of Atletico Madrid also got the nod.

"In this best team in the world, there must be the best player in the world, right?"

The Ballon d'Or, which was first won by Englishman Stanley Matthews in 1956, is decided by a ballot of journalists from around the world.

The Ballon d'Or is run by France Football, after confirmation this year Fifa had broken away from the award.
