At a White House ceremony on Monday night, Mr Kavanaugh said he was starting his new job without bitterness.

He thanked the Republican senators for supporting Kavanaugh and not backing down amid the numerous accusations against him.

Kavanaugh knows numerous justices, who all showed up at the White House Monday night. Kavanaugh officially became a member of the high court Saturday.

"On behalf of our nation, I want to apologise to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the bad pain and suffering you have been forced to endure", he said. Before the arguments, Chief Justice John Roberts welcomed Kavanaugh, 53, to a court that now has five conservative members and four liberals.

Amid and immediately following the fight for the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, voters were asked, "If the elections for Congress were being held today, which party's candidate would you vote for in your Congressional district?" The event is unusual for new justices. Justice Samuel Alito spoke at his swearing-in as well. He already has been at the Supreme Court preparing for his first day on the bench Tuesday.

110 Justices have been men; two of the only four women to sit on the Bench - Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, both of whom are now serving - were nominated by President Barack Obama. The other three - Shannon Grammel, Megan Lacy and Sara Nommensen - worked for appeals court judges appointed by Republican presidents.

The new justice said Monday that his two daughters are expected to be in the courtroom Tuesday as their father and his new colleagues were hearing arguments. "That is who I am".

The statement said the complaints "seek investigations only of the public statements he has made as a nominee to the Supreme Court of the United States".

Trump Claims Democrats Desire to Impeach New Supreme Court Justice
But constituents in ME have told a different story since Collins' speech last Friday, in which she suggested that Dr. Wade will be overturned, at least in part, within five years.

"He's a great person and it was very, very unfair what happened to him".

"It was a disgraceful situation brought about by people that are evil", he said. And he toughed it out. Police barricades are up in front of the court, but the few protesters on hand are congregating near the garage where the justices enter.

Kavanaugh's confirmation proceedings exploded in controversy after Christine Blasey Ford went public with allegations that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982. Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

Kavanaugh was sworn in Saturday evening in a private ceremony as protesters chanted outside the court building. "That process is over", he said. "We don't give up", he said.

Kavanaugh's confirmation gave the Republican president a major political victory ahead of crucial November 6 congressional elections, with Trump's second selection for the nation's highest judicial body.

Media captionTrump: "The main base of the Democrats have shifted so far left we'll end up being Venezuela".

Questions from Kavanaugh and Justice Neil Gorsuch, President Donald Trump's two high-court picks, suggested they could vote against the Trump administration and side with a criminal defendant from Florida who is fighting an increase in his sentence from just over six years to possibly more than 15 years.

That could put the Iowa Republican at odds with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
