Reports reaching Pulselive.co.ke indicate that the Tanzanian businessman was kidnapped on Thursday morning as he walked into a gym. Two of the men are believed to be white foreign nationals.

Mr Dewji is also a major sponsor of one of Tanzania's biggest football teams, Simba.

Mr Dewji served as a ruling party MP for a decade until 2015.

They drove into the hotel and opened fire before bundling Dewji into a vehicle and speeding off, said Dar es Salaam regional police commissioner Lazaro Mambosaso.

"Three people have already been arrested but we can't divulge their identity for the moment", he said.

The kidnappers fired shots in the air before driving away with the billionaire, eyewitnesses said.

An Uber driver nearby said when Mr Dewji appeared, the auto parked inside flashed lights before the two white men alighted from their vehicle and went straight to where Dewji was.

Dar es Salaam special zone commander said security police around the country, including at airports and all exit points have been put on high alert in the hunt for the abductors.

Dewji was kidnapped as he entered the gym of a luxury hotel in Dar es Salaam.

Dewji, who according to Forbes is Africa's youngest billionaire, was elected to parliament on the CCM ticket but did not seek re-election to his seat in the 2015 election.

Dewji runs MeTL, a multi-establishment company operating in six African countries which was founded by his father in the 1970s.

Dewji is also the first Tanzanian to join the Giving Pledge, a commitment by billionaires to help address society's most pressing problems by promising to give more than half their wealth to charity.
