Dramatic Footage Shows Moment Inside Soyuz Capsule When Booster Rocket Failed

  • The launch of the Soyuz rocket

The duo blasted off from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard the Russian Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft. The space station has enough food and supplies for the current crew to last six months, the Interfax news service reported, citing an unidentified person.

About a half-hour later, the capsule parachuted onto a barren area about 20 kilometres (12 miles) east of the city of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan.

What happened during the flight?

The astronauts were to dock at the International Space Station six hours after the launch, but the three-stage Soyuz booster suffered an unspecified failure of its second stage.

Photographs later released by Roscosmos after the rescue showed the two astronauts smiling and relaxing on sofas at a town near their landing site as they underwent medical tests. Eleven minutes after liftoff, NASA tweeted that the "crew is returning to Earth in a ballistic descent mode", meaning the spacecraft was falling to Earth without any propulsion. Such a landing is created to decelerate rapidly to bring the astronauts back to the ground, meaning it takes a steep angle of descent and can put the astronauts under extreme gravitational forces, up to eight times normal gravity, as Joe Pappalardo at Popular Mechanics reports.

How have the crew fared?

Soon afterwards both space agencies were reporting the astronauts were in good health. The image shows them sitting on a couch, hooked up to blood pressure monitors and oxygen monitors.

NASA officials now must decide how or whether to maintain a USA presence on the $100 billion orbital research laboratory. The malfunction appeared to occur around what is termed "staging", where the ascending vehicle goes through the process of discarding its empty fuel segments. They then started the process of flying back to Baikonur. This caused the capsule to drop very sharply into the Earth's atmosphere.

"All of the systems that were there in case of a rocket failure worked".

For Boeing, launches are set for March and August 2019 respectively.

The remaining three are technically enhanced and therefore expected to have significantly longer operational lives. The Hubble Space Telescope had to be placed into safe mode after it encountered a major issue on Friday, Oct. 5.

What does this mean for future Soyuz missions?

ABC News reported that Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov announced that all manned launches will be suspended until the investigation is complete and the cause of the rocket's failure can be pin-pointed.

He rejected suggestions it could harm USA relations, saying they recognised it was a "hi-tech industry linked to risk", but he added: "We certainly won't hide the reasons, it is uncommon for such situations".

It was the first space mission for Hague, who joined NASA's astronaut corps in 2013.

Flight controllers kept the three space station residents informed, assuring them, "The boys have landed".

NASA has confirmed that Roscosmos has already created a commission to investigate the cause of the anomaly, although it doesn't expect its counterpart to hold a press conference today.

Have there been similar incidents in the past?

The failure is a setback for the Russian space program and the latest in a string of mishaps. NASA now depends on Russian Soyuz launch systems to ferry crew members to the station. "Russia's space program, deep in crisis, has experienced a series of high-profile launch failures over the past decade".

The Soyuz system has a long history of reliable launches. Officials are also investigating the unusual hole recently found in a Soyuz spacecraft aboard the International Space Station. Russia's Investigative Committee said it opened a criminal investigation into the matter.
