"According to the Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA) there are a total of 387 ROCA registrants are in areas where Tropical Storm Michael is anticipated to make landfall or have a potentially significant impact".

Looking at the entire hurricane season, Michael had the strongest winds since 1992 and Hurricane Andrew.

The initial flight was smooth, but things got steadily more turbulent as the aircraft got closer and closer to the eye of the storm.

Debris left by Hurricane Michael seen in Mexico Beach, Fla., early Thursday.

They said it was still not clear how many people stayed put and would need to be rescued.

"Hurricane Michael is forecast to be the most destructive storm to hit the Florida Panhandle in a century", Governor Rick Scott said.

Patterson said about 2,500 of the town's 3,500 people were still there, including about 100 in a beachside area who ignored a mandatory evacuation order.

States of emergency have been declared in all or parts of Florida, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina.

Now known more for its rains than the strength of its winds, Florence caused devastating floods, killed at least 39 and caused about $45 billion in estimated damages.

The NWS said it had found no record of any previous Category 4 hurricanes that made landfall in the Panhandle or the "Big Bend" coastal region.

The deadly hurricane's assault left nothing more than empty foundations and heaps of rubble when it smashed into Florida's northwest coast near the small town of Mexico Beach on Wednesday with screeching 155 mile per hour winds and 14-foot storm surges. The utility said some of the outages from Michael "could last several days" and anticipated as many as half a million outages across the Carolinas.

As of 5:30 a.m., PowerOutage.US reported almost 358,000 customers of Georgia utilities were without power, with that number expected to grow as the storm continued to move across the state. Its sustained winds were just 2 miles per hour (3.2 kph) shy of an extremely rare Category 5.

Michael was downgraded to a Category 1 storm as it moved into Georgia, where it was expected to continue to bring unsafe storm surge, hurricane force winds, flash flooding, and possible tornadoes.

Based on its internal barometric pressure, Michael was the third most powerful hurricane to hit the USA mainland, behind the unnamed Labor Day storm of 1935 and Camille in 1969.

Michael, which decreased to a tropical storm overnight, is continuing to weaken as it moves along the southeast USA coast.

A storm surge that caused severe flooding, with waters cresting rooftops, and winds that shredded roofs and event knocked a train off its tracks, decimated areas along its path.

Florida has activated 3500 National Guard troops.

Hurricane Michael weakened to a Category 1 storm late Wednesday as it moved across south-central Georgia with maximum sustained winds of about 75 miles per hour.
