Midterm elections in wake of Kavanaugh confirmation

  • Brett Kavanaugh is the first member of the Supreme Court to hire an all-female class of law clerks

Seventeen of the races on the ballot are for open seats with no incumbent: 14 in the House and three in the Senate. He served under Justice Kennedy, the very man Kavanaugh is now replacing. While Trump apologized on behalf of the nation for "the bad pain and suffering" Kavanaugh and his family had experienced and declared him "proven innocent", the new justice assured Americans that he would be fair and was taking the job with "no bitterness".

Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court Saturday afternoon, following weeks of contentious confirmation hearings based on the allegations of sexual assault raised by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who claimed that he held her down and assaulted her at a party when they were in high school.

He emphasized that Washington voters are known to not vote a straight party line ticket, and he said he trusts voters will continue to vote for person over party. "I think you're going to see a lot of things happen on November 6 that would not have happened before", Trump said Monday as he departed for an event in Florida. I think of these red states where Democrats had shown some promise like Tennessee and Texas. I can not support a nominee accused of sexual assault, regardless of party affiliation.

The allegations against the nominee were "all made up, it was fabricated and it was a disgrace", Mr Trump said.

"People think of us as a blue state even though we are a deeply divided state", said Cornell Clayton, director of the Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy at Washington State University. It was unclear if he was referring to the accusers, their lawyers or Democratic lawmakers.

But he later questioned her credibility and mocked her at a rally.

In each state, Republicans are now just as likely as Democrats to say they are extremely interested - erasing an edge Democrats had in several states last month.

He has now appointed Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh which has swung the court 5-4 in the Republicans' favour, meaning abortion rights are once more in the balance. Kavanaugh has also hired four clerks, all women, the first time that has happened.

Nearly a decade ago, Democrats also assailed the Tea Party, grassroots conservatives who rallied against President Barack Obama's health care law and who angrily shouted down lawmakers at town hall meetings.

Lawyer Debra Katz told MSNBC: "It's going to be quite some time before they're able to live at home".

For the Democratic Party, the Kavanaugh battle was the Little Bighorn, as seen from General Custer's point of view.

A handful of Democratic lawmakers, including congressmen Luis Gutierrez of IL and Ted Lieu of California, have pressed for Justice Kavanaugh's removal.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Pelosi said a hunt for the President's taxes would not be an act of revenge by Democrats but rather an act of oversight from "a co-equal body of government".

However, "Nobody's going to beat her", McConnell said. "We are not about impeachment".

The 76-year-old McConnell, who's been in the Senate since 1985 and majority leader since 2015, said one change he's hoping to see is on the Senate's Judiciary Committee.

"I think it'll help the president get re-elected", he said. Had Kavanaugh handled the issue with more grace, perhaps the argument would have been different. He was acquitted by the Senate the following year.

The ethics complaints were filed against Kavanaugh when he was still a sitting federal judge which made him subject to conduct rules which are ultimately overseen by Roberts himself. Republicans said at the time that the Senate should wait until a new president was elected to fill the vacancy created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.
