Twenty-two US Senators on Wednesday sent a letter to President Donald Trump triggering an investigation into the disappearance of a prominent Saudi journalist last seen entering the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul.

A team of 15 Saudis who flew in from Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, to visit and leave the consulate on the same day of his disappearance is suspected of playing a role, people familiar with the investigation said in a Washington Post report published Tuesday.

Khashoggi - a USA resident and one of the more outspoken critics of the regime of King Salman and his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, and Turkish officials suspect he was murdered.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul has said he will introduce a bill that would cut off military aid to Saudi Arabia until the missing Saudi-born dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi is found safe and well. "We want to find out what happened".

"We can not let this happen - to reporters, to anybody", he added during the Oval Office meeting with the Secretary of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator.

"They put us in a bad spot, the Saudis did, and they need to pay a heavy price, because I don't want anybody to be confused about how we feel about stuff like this", Graham said.

Reports about the US appointing investigator over the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi are untrue, said Turkish diplomatic sources on Thursday. "We don't like it and we're going to get to the bottom", he added.

His fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, has been invited to meet Mr Trump in the Oval Office.

"We are extremely anxious", he said. "‎As the President has conveyed, the United States is concerned by his disappearance. We don't know what happened yet". We can't let this happen, ' Trump said.

In a sign Turkey and Saudi Arabia might be looking for a way forward, Turkey accepted a Saudi proposal to form a joint working group to investigate the case, Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency quoted presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin as saying.

They asked Trump to determine whether "a foreign person is responsible for an extrajudicial killing, torture, or other gross violation of internationally recognised human rights" and report back in 120 days with a decision on the imposition of sanctions on whoever was responsible.

Trump also spoke about the disappearance while being interviewed on the Fox & Friends program on Thursday, saying the U.S.is being "very tough" as it looks into the case.

The Khashoggi incident might make it very hard for the Trump administration to win congressional approval for arms sales to the Saudis.

Decades of close U.S. -Saudi relations, which have only intensified under Trump, appeared in jeopardy by the suggestion of a carefully plotted murder of a government critic. The fallout could reshape alliances in the region, where the U.S.is seeking to stabilize Syria, contain Iranian weapon development and support a Saudi-led coalition in Yemen's civil war.

"I would normally prefer not to address such outrageous claims, especially when it concerns the well-being of a missing citizen who dedicated a great portion of his life to serve his country", Khalid bin Salman said in a statement.

"There's a sense of entitlement, I hate to use the word, arrogance, that comes with dealing with them", said Sen.

"Several of Khashoggi's friends said that over the past four months, senior Saudi officials close to the crown prince had called Khashoggi to offer him protection, and even a high-level job working for the government if he returned to his home country", the Post reported.

Today, Turkish television broadcaster NTV released CCTV footage of some of the Saudis going from the airport to the Movenpick Hotel, where they are believed to have stayed, and on to the consulate.
