Expedition 57 Flight Engineer Nick Hague of NASA, left, is welcomed by NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine after Hague landed at the Krayniy Airport with Expedition 57 Flight Engineer Alexey Ovchinin of Roscosmos, Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, in Baikonur, Kazakhstan, after an emergency landing following the failure of a Russian booster rocket carrying them to the International Space Station.

A Russian spacecraft traveling to the International Space Station Thursday had to make an emergency landing when a rocket engine failed to fire.

A view shows the Soyuz capsule transporting US astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexei Ovchinin, after it made an emergency landing following a failure of its booster rockets, near the city of Zhezkazgan in central Kazakhstan October 11, 2018. "Teams are working with our Russian partners to obtain more information about the issue with the booster from today's launch", the agency said.

The American space agency said on Twitter that the crew were in good condition, after the capsule landed safely in Kazakhstan.

U.S. astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexei Ovchinin landed safely and rescue crews who raced to locate them on the Kazakh steppe quickly linked up with them, according to the United States space agency NASA and Russia's space agency Roscosmos.

When asked about the accident, Trump said on Thursday that he was "not at all worried" that Americans had to rely on Russians to go to space.

Search and rescue teams from Russian Federation arrived as soon as the spacecraft touched ground to assist the astronauts.

In August, the International Space Station crew spotted a hole in a Russian Soyuz capsule docked to the orbiting outpost that caused a brief loss of air pressure before being patched. "Instead they'll be taking a sharp landing, coming back to Earth". This was Ovchinin's second trip to the station, and Hague's first trip.

This morning's mishap is the fourth time in history the Soyuz space program has had to conduct a ballistic reentry into Earth's atmosphere.

"From everything we have seen, the crew is in great shape", Wiseman said.

Manned space launches have been suspended pending an investigation.

Russia's rockets are now the only way to get astronauts to the space station, but all manned flights have been out on hold in the wake of Thursday's accident.

However, Thursday's incident was the first manned launch failure since 1983 when a Soyuz rocket exploded in the launch area.

Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques had been scheduled to be on the launch of a Soyuz spacecraft on December 20.

"We're getting really close already", Bridenstine said.

A space walk planned for mid-November has also been cancelled, he said. It is the same capsule that was found to have a tiny hole in it after causing an oxygen leak on the station in September. And from what we know so far ... the crew's efforts, were heroic. -Russian cooperation continuing despite geopolitical tensions.
