  • French authorities open investigation into €5mln PSG-Red Star ‎UCL 'match-fixing'

The investigation was launched after French newspaper L'Equipe alleged, in a report, than a Red Star Belgrade official placed a bet of nearly five million euros for the Serbian club to lose by five goals.

French authorities have opened an investigation into the Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain and Red Star Belgrade following reports of possible match-fixing.

"Scandalised and disgusted, Red Star Belgrade rejects suspicions concerning the PSG-Red Star game and the implication of anyone from the club in any untoward dealings", they said in a statement.

According to French outlet L'Equipe, French authorities have began looking into the outcome of the contest after a tip off by UEFA.

Even though match-fixing allegations did not focus on the title race, which involved clubs such as Anderlecht, Club Brugge, and Standard Liege last season, it centred on the relegation fight and a once-famous club, FC Mechelen, which has fallen on hard times.

A statement from PSG read: "It is with utmost amazement and indignation that we have learned of the information that you have shared".

"Paris Saint-Germain remains at the disposal of the investigators and will not tolerate the slightest attack on its reputation nor that of its officials".

Police in France are now investigating the claims after the National Finance Prosecutor was alerted by UEFA president President Aleksander Ceferin before the fixture.

Brazilian superstar Neymar had scored a hat-trick in the match and goals from Angel di Maria, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe had given the Parisian club a 6-1 win with Marko Marin scoring the only goal for visitors.

The Serbian club released a statement as well and denied the reports. "Current technology is so advanced that it is simply impossible that such a case can not be resolved".

BBC Sport has contacted Red Star Belgrade for comment. Dzajic added that he knows "absolutely nothing about this - it is not possible, it is untrue".

PSG host Napoli next, while Red Star visit Liverpool.
