  • President Donald Trump shares a laugh with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis "could" be considering a departure, Saudis can expect "severe punishment" for any involvement in the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, and climate change is probably real, but not caused by man, President Donald Trump said in an interview aired Sunday on CBS' 60 Minutes.

President Trump on Saturday confirmed The Washington Post's Friday report that his administration is considering ways to legally revive its suspended policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the border. Trump has claimed before that China is interfering in the 2018 election, even as the administration has provided no actual instances of specific electoral interference.

During his interview with "60 Minutes" that was broadcast Sunday night, President Donald Trump regularly dodged questions and criticized the media's dishonesty when interviewer Lesley Stahl pushed back on his non-answers. However Mattis had never identified himself as a Republican, nor as a Democrat.

Mr Mattis, seen as one of the steadiest but also more independent members of Trump's cabinet, has served as a low-profile counterweight to the president in his often abrasive treatment of United States allies. He also pointed to a long military career that taught him to act in a "proudly apolitical" manner, in which USA servicemembers carry out orders from Republican and Democratic presidents alike.

Mattis also disagreed with Trump's decision to halt large-scale joint military exercises with South Korea as the USA has tried to engage directly with North Korea to convince Kim Jong Un to halt its nuclear program. I don't think it's a hoax....

It also reflects a White House headed by a president who is increasingly frustrated with his team, and more willing to follow his own counsel in matters of domestic and foreign policy. "We just continue doing our job".

Perhaps these outlets have some privileged wisdom about the situation, or maybe merely by failing to guarantee that he is staying, Trump is signaling that Mattis is leaving.

"I know, but why do you love that guy?"

"I like General Mattis". "We're going to do whatever we can do to get it slowed down". I mean- I'm not a baby.

Mr Mattis's future has become a focus of media speculation, particularly after last month's release of a book by Watergate reporter Bob Woodward that portrayed him as privately disparaging Mr Trump to associates.

Mattis denied ever making the remarks.

Mattis left Central Command and retired from the military in 2013. He told his Senate confirmation hearing past year he was "enjoying a full life west of the Rockies" when the call came about the position.

"Thank you, President Trump".

Last month, Mattis appeared to be caught off-guard by statements from National Security Advisor John Bolton that the estimated 2,000 USA troops in Syria would not be withdrawn until Iranian forces and Iranian-allied militias also left the country.
