  • Viral Outbreak at New Jersey Rehabilitation Center Leaves 6 Children Dead

There have been 18 cases overall of adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northwest of NY, the state Health Department said.

Six children at a New Jersey healthcare facility have died in an outbreak of adenovirus, a virus that can cause cold and flu-like symptoms, according to health officials.

Adenoviruses typically cause mild illnesses but the children affected are "medically fragile", officials said.

The strain of adenovirus seen in the outbreak is associated with communal living arrangements and known to cause severe illness.

"I am heartbroken by the news that several children have lost their lives in an adenovirus outbreak at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, and pray for the full recovery of the other children impacted", Murphy said. A team was sent back Tuesday. Health officials confirmed Tuesday that 18 patients have contracted the virus.

"It can cause pretty much like a common cold type of illness in the majority of the population", Javaid said, adding that if someone's immune system is compromised a minor cold can turn into something much worse.

"The New Jersey Department of Health will continue its active on-site surveillance and has recommended measures to protect against the further spread of infection", he said.

The last outbreak of adenovirus #7 was recorded in OR from October 2013 to July 2014, which infected 198 people and killed five. The health department was first notified of cases of respiratory illness on October 9.

The viruses can be spread through close personal contact, coughing and sneezing or touching contaminated objects.

The CDC is providing technical assistance to the state.

The children were infected with the virus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, which houses a rehabilitation center, a nursing home for elderly people and a pediatrics unit.

It's unclear what caused the viral outbreak, which is being investigated by the CDC. The center has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation, and has solicited medical guidance on the virus, the AP reported.

A scientific paper cited by the Cdc reported that a 1998 outbreak of type 7 adenovirus at a paediatric chronic-care facility in Chicago killed eight patients.
