Mayor of Utah city killed in apparent insider attack in Afghanistan

A former mayor from Utah who has served in the state's National Guard since 2013 was identified Saturday as the US service member who was killed in an "insider attack" in Afghanistan earlier in the day, according to reports.

The statement further added that "Initial reports indicate the attacker was a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces". The wounded service member was undergoing medical treatment and was in stable condition.

This latest attack is now under investigation, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation said, adding that additional information would be released as appropriate.

Utah Governor Gary Herbert and Major General S. Burton are planning to address the press on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 12 p.m.at the Utah National Guard's Draper headquarters.

The mayor of a Utah town who was deployed in Afghanistan as a member of the state's National Guard has been killed in an "insider attack", the military said.

Taylor leaves behind a wife and seven children, according to the Deseret News of Salt Lake City. Taylor was elected to the city council of North Ogden, about 45 miles north of Salt Lake City, in 2009 and became mayor in 2013, according to the city council website.

Friends and colleagues are confirming the death of North Ogden Mayor Brent Taylor, who was deployed with the Utah National Guard in Afghanistan.

Taylor, a trainer of Afghan commandos, died when an Afghan soldier attacked.

"Things are going great, and I absolutely love the dedicated USA and Afghan soldiers I serve with every day", Taylor wrote in an update about his deployment earlier this year.

A U.S. service member was killed in action in Afghanistan Saturday in an insider attack, according to a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation statement. "We feel blessed to have had him as our mayor".

"What we do for our country is very risky business, but it's important to remember why we do it", Burton said.

His most recent Facebook post was about the recent elections in Afghanistan.
