Khashoggi disappeared on October 2 after entering Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul for marriage formalities as his fiancee waited outside.

An unnamed official also told the Washington Post "biological evidence" in the consulate's garden suggested that because of acid "Khashoggi's body was not in need of burying".

"We knew that Khashoggi's body was dismembered", Aktay told the newspaper.

Mr Pompeo said the U.S. had "deep and long-term strategic relationships" with Saudi Arabia and said "we intend to make sure that those relationships remain intact".

"We hope the United States reciprocates in kind", Prince Turki, a royal family member, said in remarks at the National Council on U.S.

"According to the latest information we have, the reason they dismembered his body is to dissolve it easier". Last week, the kingdom's public prosecutor said the attack on the journalist had been premeditated. "The treatment of the body is a separate crime".

"We are shocked and saddened by the efforts of certain Saudi officials to cover up Khashoggi's premeditated murder, rather than serve the cause of justice, as our friendship would require", Erdogan said.

Saudi authorities have denied Turkish police permission to search a well in the consulate's garden but did allow them to take water samples for analysis, according to local media reports.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist critical of the Saudi government and its de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, disappeared after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

"I think that a way must be found to achieve both goals", Netanyahu stressed, "because the larger problem is Iran, and we have to make sure that Iran does not continue the malign activities".

7 killed in Egypt as bus carrying Christian pilgrims is ambushed
It's also in Minya where most acts of violence, like attacks on churches and Christian homes and businesses, take place. No group immediately claimed responsibility, but militants linked to ISIS have regularly targeted Christians.

The newspaper quoted "people familiar with the calls" as saying that Netanyahu and Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi defended bin Salman, saying his effective leadership of Saudi Arabia had important strategic implications.

Khashoggi, a vocal critic of the Saudi regime, was living in self-imposed exile in the United States since 2017.

Pompeo's remarks come after Istanbul's chief prosecutor, Irfan Fidan, gave the most detailed official account of the killing so far on Wednesday.

But he pointedly failed to absolve Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of responsibility for unleashing a "death squad" against the outspoken Saudi journalist whose death has badly tainted the kingdom's de facto ruler.

Israel and Saudi Arabia do not have diplomatic relations but share intelligence about their mutual enemies, especially Iran.

"The Trump administration has taken a position that is devoid of moral foundation", she wrote. Surely reporters as good as Kirkpatrick and Hubbard could have found high-level sources within both Israel and the USA who could have detailed the obvious - that Israel wants Mohammed bin Salman to stay exactly where he is, no matter what brutal crimes he ordered.

Germany and Switzerland have vowed to halt arms sales to Saudi Arabia until the case is clarified.

"Jamal Khashoggi was not a risky person in any way possible".

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is predicted to be in power for at least 50 more years, which has prompted the Trump administration to stand by the monarch.
