Raheem Sterling was awarded a freakish penalty on Wednesday night during Manchester City's 6-0 thrashing of Shakhtar Donetsk, but manager Pep Guardiola has defended the Englishman for not pointing out the error to the referee.

"I went to chip the ball and I don't know what happened next", he told BT Sport.

City boss Pep Guardiola appeared to motion that he did not agree with the decision and Sterling himself accepts that he was the beneficiary of an incorrect call.

"I didn't feel contact. I hit the floor, scuffed the floor, so apologies to the ref and apologies to Shakhtar".

I was not surprised that Sterling didn't own up to the fact he'd not been touched, but rather that as experienced a referee as Viktor Kassai had made such a awful error. It takes 10 seconds for somebody to say something to the referee. Sterling subsequently made it 3-0 with a fine goal, before Jesus added his second spot-kick and then then wrapped up a hat-trick, either sided of a Riyad Mahrez strike.

But (referee) Mateu Lahoz didn't want to concede that goal, so that's why it happened, but he could do that, yes.

He was followed by another Fox News host, Jeanine Pirro , both of whom gave remarks from the lectern backing the president. "By the way, all those people in the back are fake news ", Hannity, who is not a journalist, said to cheers.

When Guardiola was asked on his views on the penalty he said "It's not".

"We don't like to score a goal in that situation but [Sterling] didn't realise. The referees said a long time ago there must be help, because they want to make a good performance, they don't want to make mistakes", he said.

The Germans are third on three points, while Shakhtar are bottom on two and City will book their place in the next round with a win or a draw in Lyon on November 27. "Unfortunately we are not already qualified for the next stage but we are so close and we (will) try to keep and maintain that level".

City's win put them three points clear of Lyon at the top of Group F with two matches left to play.

Speaking after the game Guardiola said he knew that it was not a penalty and perhaps Sterling could have said something to the referee.
