Trump, Democrats battle in campaign's final day

  • Some 250,000 jobs were created last month beating expectations

"Trump's not on the ballot, but he is on the ballot", he said at a phone-bank event to get out the vote at the local Republican headquarters.

Trump and Obama are the most popular figures in their parties, and their appearances on the campaign trail are created to stoke enthusiasm among core supporters in the late stages of a midterm congressional election widely seen as a referendum on Trump's first two years.

"Everything matters and everything's at stake", Schriock said.

Sessions, a 71-year-old former US senator from Alabama, was an early and loyal supporter of Trump but drew his fury when he recused himself from an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 White House campaign. Another 35 U.S. senate seats are in play, as well as nearly 40 gubernatorial votes and the balance of power in virtually every state chamber.

Though the GOP maintains its majorities in the legislature, the party will still have to grapple with a Democratic governor in Gretchen Whitmer, who defeated Attorney General Bill Schuette in that contest. Perhaps more importantly, they would also win subpoena power to investigate Trump's many personal and professional missteps.

After a campaign in which Trump was accused of race-baiting with repeated and unsubstantiated references to an "invasion" of undocumented immigrants bent on rape and murder, left-right divisions in America could not be deeper.

Trump's Republican coalition is increasingly becoming older, whiter, more male and less likely to have a college degree. "Obama's barnstorming is something that we have not seen, and I think it is an indication that he takes the Trump presidency as a rebuff of his own performance as president".

Just five years ago, the Republican National Committee (RNC) reported that the party's very survival depends upon attracting more minorities and women.

"We energized the Republican Party with that", Trump said in Missouri.

One of the RNC report's authors, Ari Fleischer, acknowledged that Republican leaders never envisioned expanding their ranks with white, working-class men.

Obama, who has been active on the campaign trail in the weeks leading up to the midterm elections, spoke with a rasp in his voice Sunday as he took aim at Trump, telling the crowd that "the character of our country is on the ballot" and accusing Republicans of "shamelessly" lying.

Bernie Sanders, the leftist populist who some feel would have had a better chance than Clinton to take on Trump in 2016, lashed out Monday at the president, calling him a "pathological liar".

Democrats benefit from a massive gender gap that has persisted throughout the fall (women favor Democrats 62% to 35%, while men are about evenly divided, 49% back the Republican, while 48% support the Democrat in their district), a wide lead among political independents (53% for the Democrat to 39% for the Republican), and strong support from black and Latino voters (88% of black voters and 66% of Latino voters favor the Democrats). And among white men without college degrees, Republicans led 65 percent to 30 percent.

White House aides called on Democrats to work with Republicans in the next Congress.

'She Has Earned This': Trump Praises Pelosi, Warns Democrats
Bob Menendez, who, less than a year ago, stood trial for federal corruption charges. "I think you should let me run the country". What that means for 2020 is not entirely clear, given that two of the senators and one of the governors elected were incumbents.

Mexican drug lord El Chapo goes on trial in NY
He has been in solitary confinement in a high-security NY prison since Mexico extradited him to the United States in January 2017. The only visitors he is allowed are his lawyers and twin, seven-year-old daughters, from whom he is separated by thick glass.

The positive response is twice what Barack Obama received late in his second term as president.

"One election won't eliminate racism, sexism or homophobia", Obama said during an appearance in Florida.

While Obama will deserve some of the credit for helping to drive turnout for the Democrats, according to Cohen, "it was going to be a bad election, anyway, for the president just based on his unpopularity throughout the country". "But it'll be a start".

Returning to his immigration-heavy 2016 playbook, Trump went on to unleash his full fury on a caravan of migrants slowly making their way to the southern border. The president also said soldiers would use lethal force against migrants who throw rocks, before later reversing himself. This compares to the about 60% of eligible voters that come out in presidential elections. Potential wins in Ohio, Florida, Wisconsin and MI would be a balm if Democrats lose the House.

Republicans are favoured to retain their slight majority in the US Senate, now at two seats, which would let them retain the power to approve Supreme Court and other judicial nominations on straight party-line votes.

Billionaire former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who personally invested $110 million to help Democrats this year, largely in the House, has seized on voter education levels in picking target races, according to senior aide Howard Wolfson.

Still, about one-third of voters said Trump was not a factor in their votes.

Trump has publicly remained nonchalant about the notion of a Democratic-controlled House.

Democrats in Congress were poised to make gains in the House, seeking to flip 23 seats to regain control of the chamber and serve as a check on Trump's policies.

The President has focused much of his campaigning in the final stretch on shoring up Republican Senate candidates, though he insisted the House will still very much in play.

Democrats gained six seats in the election, however, and the Republican House majority will be reduced to 58-52.

Overall, 42% of likely voters say their vote will be to express opposition to the president, while 28% say that it'll be to support him.

Indeed, powerful Democratic forces are already pushing for Trump's impeachment, even if Democratic leaders aren't ready to go that far.
