  • Several Injured In Shooting At Bar In Southern California Says Police

Thirteen people including a sheriff's sergeant and the gunman were killed Wednesday in a shooting at a Southern California bar.

Authorities so far had no indication of a motive, or of any connection to terrorism.

Local media are reporting that the suspect in this mass shooting is 29-year-old David Ian Long. "A friend yelled 'Everybody down!' We were hiding behind tables trying to keep ourselves covered".

The dead included 11 people inside the bar and a veteran sheriff's sergeant who was the first officer inside the door, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

"They felt he might be suffering from PTSD, [given] the fact he was a veteran and had been in the corps", Mr Dean said. Many walked past TV cameras with blank stares or tears in their eyes.

Jason Coffman was one of the parents anxiously awaiting news Thursday morning about those inside the bar.

It was "College Night" at the bar when the shooting occurred. "I love you. I'll talk to you later".

The University has determined that multiple Pepperdine students were on site at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks. So was Justin Meek, a 23-year-old recent graduate of Cal Lutheran, according to the university.

The incident came less than two weeks after a gunman with an automatic rifle fatally shot 11 people during sabbath services at a Pittsburgh synagogue.

US President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the shooting and praised "great bravery shown by police".

Long was armed with a Glock 21, a.45-caliber pistol created to hold 10 rounds plus one in the chamber, according to the sheriff.

The sheriff said Long was believed to have been armed with a single handgun - a.45-caliber Glock 21, created to hold 10 rounds plus one in the chamber. The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke only on condition of anonymity.

Long lived in Newbury Park, about 5 miles from the Borderline bar.

Law enforcement had several previous contacts with Long, including in April, when officers were called to a disturbance at his home, the sheriff said. "Maybe there was a motive for this particular night, but we have no information leading to that at all".

Authorities say a responding deputy was shot and taken to a hospital. Mental health specialists talked to him and didn't feel he qualified to be detained under the state's "5150" mental health detention law, Dean said.

He said he and others smashed their way out of the bar onto a balcony and then jumped down to safety. Investigators didn't immediately know how many rounds the magazine could hold, he said.

Dean said that the dead police officer, who was named as Ron Helus and had been on the force for 29 years, was among the first on the scene. He said he was "dumbfounded" by the bloodshed.

Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus and a passing highway patrolman arrived around 11:20 p.m.in response to several 911 calls, heard gunfire and went inside, the sheriff said. Helus died while being treated at an area hospital several hours after he was shot, Dean said.

The highway patrolman pulled Helus out, then waited as a SWAT team and scores more officers arrived.

A sergeant from the sheriff's office was the first police officer to enter the bar and was met immediately by gunfire. "He shot the doorman, bouncer ... just a young man", Dominguez told CNN affiliate KABC, choking up.

Helus went in because gunshots still were being fired, Dean said.

Speaking at press conference in the wee hours of Thursday, a sheriff said that around a dozen other people had been injured. He said they seemed to know what to do. "Unfortunately, our young people, people at nightclubs, have learned that this may happen".

"It's a horrific scene in there", Mr Dean said.

Kuredjian said it has been "quite some time" since there was a shooting of any kind in Thousand Oaks, a city of about 130,000 people about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Los Angeles, just across the county line.

Borderline Bar & Grill is a country-themed bar that is known for it's large dance floor, according to ABC News. "I could still hear gunshots after everyone left", the Times quoted the man as saying.

"When (he) started to reload, that's when we got people out of there and I didn't look back", Wennerstrom said. "As everyone crouched down on the floor, I figured that my only chance would be to run out to the nearest exit".

She ran toward the nearest exit but tripped, and people kept running on top of her in a rush to escape.

"All of a sudden we heard the "bang, bang" of the gunshots and it just started going insane and people were pushing. There's a fence right there so I said, 'Everyone get over the fence as quickly as you can, ' and I followed them over". He said he had friends who hadn't been accounted for.

California Lutheran University student Teylor Whittler told KABC that after she heard a shot, she "turned around and I saw him (the gunman) shoot a couple more times".
