Members of the public are being urged to avoid the area with several streets reportedly placed on lock-down.

THE crazed attacker who stabbed three bystanders on a busy Melbourne street has died, as police confirm the rampage was terror-related.

Victoria state police Commissioner Graham Ashton says the attacker was from Somalia and known to the authorities, mostly because of family members who were "persons of interest" to police. One of the victims later succumbed to the injuries, while two others are still receiving treatment.

More than 100 police swarmed the city's busy Bourke Street at 4.20pm on Friday after reports of a man settling his vehicle alight and chasing people with a knife.

Dramatic footage captured from the scene shows officers try to apprehend the man following his stabbing attack.

Officers said they "are not looking for anyone further at this early stage".

As a truck blazed in the background, a man flailed a long knife at police officers, who backpedalled desperately.

A Melbourne-based reporter tweeted that nearby buildings were placed on lockdown by the police following the incident.

"In the midst of tragedy, you can find such pride in the work of by-standers to come to the aid of others", said Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews.

Three people have been stabbed, including the fatality.

One witness, Sarah Krug said she was heading to the night noddle markets when "all hell broke loose".

A handful of videos and images uploaded to social media appear to show the man attempting to stab police before he is shot.

Major disruptions are expected in the CBD on Friday evening, as details of a major incident in Bourke Street emerge.

Some public transport in the area has also been suspended.

More than 100 police have swarmed on the area. Police response was swift and overwhelming.
