Hollywood, Marvel movie stars react to Stan Lee’s passing

  • Legendary Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee has died

For Lee, his story could be as small, even, as a single city - frequently his own, New York, where his family had struggled through the Great Depression in a one-room apartment. Fans of the films came to enjoy seeing his genial everyman presence in the films as much as the wanton destruction wrought by the super villains - many of whom were created by Lee in the first place.

Lee died Sunday night Pacific time at a Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, an attorney for Lee's daughter told CNN. TMZ spoke to Lee's daughter, J.C.

You will spend the rest of your life bumping into things that are in the world because of Stan Lee.

As the top writer at Marvel Comics and later as its publisher, he revived the industry in the 1960s by offering the costumes and action craved by younger readers while insisting on sophisticated plots, college-level dialogue, satire, science fiction, even philosophy.

Lee had a rocky relationship with Marvel once the company went full-tilt Hollywood. While his involvement with his creations dwindled as he aged, Lee still managed to make time for brief cameos in virtually every Marvel movie released since 1989.

Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created.

"No one has had more of an impact on my career and everything we do at Marvel Studios than Stan Lee".

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Lee set his sights on Hollywood, and television shows based on Marvel characters began to populate the airwaves.

From Spidey to Black Panther to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, Lee collaborated with other authors and illustrators to put his lively imagination on the page.

On Instagram, Josh Brolin, who plays Thanos in the Avengers films, said Lee ranked alongside authors Dr Seuss and Ray Bradbury. He wrote under the name Stan Lee, which would later become his legal name, writing in his autobiography that he meant to save his given name for more literary work. He sued Marvel Entertainment in 2002 for unpaid royalties tied to the first "Spider-Man" movie, later receiving $10 million.

Actress Kaley Cuoco said she "adored his visits, hugs and fantastic stories", adding: "He was an epic superhero and I will never forget him!" No cause of death has been named as of yet, but Lee has recently been stricken with a number of illnesses, including a bout of pneumonia. However, his legacy, in the characters that we love and the people that he touched will certainly live on.
