White House correspondent Jim Acosta arrived at a US District Court in Washington on Wednesday after his company filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the revocation of his press credentials.

The news organizations siding with CNN plan to file a "friend-of-court" brief urging a judge to order the administration to reinstate Acosta's pass to the White House.

CNN's lawyers say the case hinges on Acosta and CNN's First Amendment rights; the shifting rationales behind the ban; and the administration's failure to follow the federal regulations that pertain to press passes, an alleged violation of Fifth Amendment rights.

CNN and Acosta filed suit against President Donald Trump and top aides on Tuesday for stripping Acosta, without warning, of his access to the White House, where he works daily.

"If left unchallenged, the actions of the White House would create a risky chilling effect for any journalist who covers our elected officials", it said.

In response, the Justice Department argued in a court filing that Trump has "broad discretion to regulate access to the White House for journalists". "This was not the first time this reporter has inappropriately refused to yield to other reporters", Sanders said in a statement.

After agreeing with Neuborne that it was the wrong move for the intern to try to take the microphone back from Acosta, Lemon interjected: "I think that was staged". Get out of my White House'.

Granted, she has plenty of beef with 45 about how she was 86'd, but IF Omarosa's right about the alleged "private meetings", it confirms the media's biggest fears: That the President is trying to crush Freedom of the Press if he doesn't like your reporting.

Trump famously pointed directly at Acosta and called him "fake news" during his first press conference after winning the 2016 election. That came just hours after a live on national TV dust-up between the President and Acosta at what was supposed to be a victory lap East Room press conference by Trump and descended into a verbal brawl.

Acosta was addressing Trump when a White House intern, directed by the president, tried to remove the reporter's microphone mid-question.

Washington Post chief executive Fred Ryan said: "We support CNN in its effort to restore the press credentials of its White House reporter".

"CNN, who has almost 50 additional hard pass holders, and Acosta is no more or less special than any other media outlet or reporter with respect to the First Amendment".

Bob Woodward, a best-selling author and critic of President Donald Trump, said Tuesday night that CNN's lawsuit against the Trump administration wasn't the "remedy".

"The First Amendment protects 'robust political debate, ' including speech that is critical of those who hold political office", CNN's attorney Ted Olson, a veteran Supreme Court litigator, said in a statement.
