Following the backlash, racist private messages from co-founder Stefano Gabbana were leaked and went viral on social media platform Weibo (Instagram is blocked in China).

Alina Ma, associate director of research at market insights firm Mintel, said the Dolce & Gabbana ad left Chinese consumers confused and appeared to show the company did not understand them.

It erupted into a firestorm after screenshots circulated of an Instagram user's chat with the famously volatile Stefano Gabbana in which he used five smiling poop emojis to talk about China and launched insults at the country and its people. The campaign - which includes three short videos in which a male narrator lectures an East Asian-looking woman in a sequined D&G dress on how to eat Italian food with chopsticks - has been accused by angry Chinese netizens of being stereotypical, racist and sexist.

Scheduled for November 21, the Chinese authorities pulled the plug on the show, hours before it was to start.

"We are very sorry for any distress caused by these unauthorised posts". In a bid to further appeal to luxury's covetable Chinese consumers, @dolcegabbana released some hella offensive "instructional" videos on the usage of chopsticks.

'We don't have to accept your apology.

Just what firestorm are they attempting to extinguish this time around?

The founders, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, apologised in Mandarin and said they hoped the Chinese people would forgive them.

At the centre of the controversy was a series of ads run on social media, to publicise the show. Who wants to bet the XL cannoli "size" innuendos were his idea?

Tranova claims she has since been blocked by Gabbana and that all her Instagram posts regarding the exchange have been removed by the social media platform. Our legal office is urgently investigating.

Chinese model and actress Zhang Ziyi slammed the brand on her account with her management later confirming that she would not be attending the show and that, along with her team, she would never be using or buying from Dolce & Gabbana again. "What happened today was very unfortunate not only for us but also for all the people who worked day and night to bring this event to life".

"From the bottom of our hearts, we ask for your forgiveness", continues Gabbana, before they both say, "Dubi bu qi".

Gabbana responded to the mounting situation by posting a screenshot of the conversation overlaid with the words, "Not me", in bold. D&G has since deleted the videos from China's Twitter-like Weibo microblogging site, though they are still viewable on the company's Instagram account.

It's the latest backlash against a Western company's marketing in China, whose consumers spent more than US$100 billion on luxury purchases previous year - nearly a third of the global total - and are no longer willing to tolerate campaigns perceived as patronizing or disrespectful.
