You can tell when those involved with a project have really put their soul into it. Mark Allen, Jeep's design head, said the Gladiator was a 'bucket list item for me.' Years of visiting the Jeep Mopar Easter Safari has meant fans, owners and the community have come up to him saying they really wanted a new Jeep pickup. The answer is in the details.

It's based on the recently launched Wrangler, as you can probably tell, a vehicle that has just been awarded Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award. Its frame is also 787mm longer than the largest Wrangler. Like the Wrangler, the roof and doors are removable. It finishes with cupholders and the transmission shifter falling easily to the driver's hand.

Inside, the Gladiator picks up a number of the Wrangler's styling cues and features, especially in first-row seating and instrumentation, including its optional 8.4-inch touch-screen Uconnect infotainment system.

A standard black hard top, available across all models. There's also an optional sound system that includes a wireless speaker mounted behind the rear seats that can be removed and used outside the pickup. The backseat of the crew cab has firm, functional seating with seatbacks that flip down to fold flat.

As important as the interior and exterior look of the truck is, this new mid-size pickup player will be judged by what's underneath the body and hood.

2020 Jeep Gladiator debuts: Not just a Wrangler pickup truck

As standard, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 comes with Engine Stop-Start technology, 285 horsepower, and 260 pound-feet of torque. It'll be paired with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. All EcoDiesels will get the eight-speed.

The Command-Trac 4x4 system, standard on Sport and Overland, features a two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio, and heavy-duty front and rear axles with a 3.73 rear axle ratio. That length isn't good for the Gladiator's breakover angle (20.3 degrees for the Gladiator Rubicon compared to 22.6 degrees for the Wrangler Rubicon) or its departure angle (26 degrees for the Gladiator Rubicon versus 37 degrees for the Wrangler Rubicon), but that's the trade-off for more utility. It will be available with electric front- and rear-axle locks, a limited-slip differential and electric sway-bar disconnect. Rubicon is the top trim level here, as it is on the Wrangler. But it's more than that, blending much of the beloved SUV with some unique features for the pickup truck.

The JT truck will ride on a 204-inch (5,181-mm) frame, making it 31 inches (787 mm) longer than the Wrangler Unlimited. The pickup's tailgate will come with a halfway-down option as well. There are tow hooks front and rear and space for a winch on the front bumper if you go for a Rubicon.

As to important specification numbers, most Gladiators will have a 5,800-pound gross vehicle weight rating with Rubicon models getting heavier-duty rear springs that bumps their GVWR to 6,250 pounds. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard and is created to handle the increased torque output.
