In addition to suicide, the United States is experiencing a drug abuse crisis, with more than 70,000 overdose deaths previous year.

Drug overdoses and suicides helped fuel an increase in deaths in the US last year, and also impacted the continued decline in life expectancy for Americans, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday.

For the second time in three years, life expectancy in the US has ticked downward.

Life expectancy in the United States has now declined for three years in a row, fueled largely by a record number of drug overdose deaths and rising suicide rates, new government statistics show.

One result: Life expectancy in 2017 fell to an average of 78.6 years for the total US population, down from 78.7 years in 2016. The rates of drug overdose deaths involving heroin, natural and semisynthetic opioids and methadone were essentially unchanged from 2016.

West Virginia's rate, the highest in the nation, was 57.8 deaths per 100,000 people.

Anderson said declines like this haven't been seen since the great flu pandemic of 1918 and World War I ― though those losses were steeper. In 2017, it had risen to 14.0 per 100,000. Preliminary data from the CDC indicate that a state's overdose trend closely tracks the number of fentanyl-related deaths. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the spike somewhat reflects the aging population, it's the spike in younger age groups that raises the most concern.

While the average suicide rate in the United States has been steadily increasing for the past 20 years, the CDC's data also shows huge geographic disparities in suicide rates, with rural parts of the U.S. showing double the rate of urban areas.

But the increase in drug overdose deaths has started to slow.

The top 10 leading causes of death - including heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and suicide - were the same as in 2016, accounting for the majority of deaths.

People born in the US last year can expect to live until they are 78.6 years, a decrease of 0.1 years from the previous 12 months.

Separately released preliminary government data for the first part of 2018 have also appeared to show a levelling off in overdose deaths. Since 2008, it has ranked as the 10th leading cause of death for all ages in the US. But increases in cocaine overdoses (especially among African Americans) and methamphetamine overdoses are also driving up death rates.

There is no solution to the continued decline in life expectancy forthcoming from the ruling class.

Drug overdose deaths from synthetic opioids like fentanyl ― which killed the musicians Prince and Tom Petty ― and tramadol increased by 45 percent between 2016 and 2017.

The suicide rate is also the highest it has been in decades.

"Higher suicide rates in rural areas are due to almost 60 percent of rural homes having a gun, versus less than half of homes in urban areas", Stanford University psychiatry and behavioral sciences professor Keith Humphreys told the Post. The rate has been going up by approximately 71 percent per year since 2013.

The suicide rate in 2017 for females aged 75 and over (4.0) was significantly lower than the rate in 1999 (4.5).
