  • HIV rapidly increasing among the general population

Campaigners say one of the biggest challenges in the fight to end AIDS is encouraging people to get tested and making them aware of treatment and prevention services.

If people don't know their HIV status, they can't protect themselves, their families, their partners. In 2017, of the 7.9 million people living with HIV in South Africa, 60% are on ARVs.

As part of the World Aids Day celebration themed "Know your HIV status" the UN AIDS research conducted reports nine million people worldwide do not know their status.

The Telangana State AIDS Control Society organised several stalls giving information about AIDS, HIV, care and treatment extended to the HIV positive people.

The Union government has set sights on reducing new HIV infections by 75% in the country by 2020.

"In the hardest-hit countries, girls account for more than 80% of all new HIV infections among adolescents".

"It is not advisable to say you know the symptoms hence you will not test, it takes a while for the symptoms to show up", he stated. Stigma and discrimination still deters people from taking an HIV test. Access to confidential HIV testing is still an issue of concern. The agency's also reminding people ME that HIV care and prevention have dramatically changed since the discovery of the virus in 1984, and many patients are able to live long lives. During the intervening decades, HIV testing services became widely available - routinely through clinical settings and to higher-risk populations through community-based approaches.

PAHO/WHO also recommends that the age at which young people can take an HIV test without the consent of a parent or guardian be reduced in line with the recommendations of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. PAHO/WHO recommends that health systems expand options for HIV testing to include HIV self-tests and lay provider tests, which can be done at home, as well as in places other than health centres, with flexible hours and same-day results. However, it is also an important reminder that despite progress made, the world can not become complacent in its response to HIV. Only 50% of the nearly 37 million people living with HIV are receiving life sustaining HIV antiretrovirals.
