  • Trump and Kim opened up dialogue on denuclearization of the Korean peninsula after months of trading military threats and pointed barbs in June

Trump said on Air Force One while returning to Washington from Argentina that his next meeting with Kim would likely happen in January or February.

"We're getting along very well".

But while inter-Korean relation-building has continued apace over the past year, talks with the U.S. have stalled.

A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea across the eastern land border on Saturday, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Moon's spokesperson Kim Eui-Kyeom appreciated Trump's comment on second meet with Kim and said, "We hope a concrete agenda and logistics will be determined soon".

But critics say the South risks conceding some of its conventional military strength before North Korea takes any meaningful steps on denuclearization, as the larger nuclear negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang seemingly drift into a stalemate.

China's influence as North Korea's largest trading partner is viewed as key to any significant agreement between the US and North Korea.

Moon spoke to reporters on Saturday aboard his presidential plane en route to New Zealand from Argentina, where he met Trump on the sidelines of a Group of 20 Nations summit.

Pence has also said it was essential that global sanctions pressure be maintained on North Korea until its complete denuclearisation was achieved.

They have begun work to reconnect their railway systems, removed landmines and destroyed military bunkers at parts of the frontier.

Despite the warming ties, it remains unclear whether the North's leader Kim Jong Un will make his first-ever visit to the South this year, as Seoul is hoping.

Trump said they had discussed three sites for the summit but had not decided anything, adding that he was open to receiving Kim in the United States at some point, reports Efe news. Kim agreed to travel to Seoul after hosting Moon in Pyongyang in September for their third summit this year.

Trump and Moon also reaffirmed their commitment to achieve the final, fully verified denuclearisation of the DPRK, and agreed on the importance of "maintaining vigorous enforcement of existing sanctions to ensure the DPRK understands that denuclearisation is the only path to economic prosperity and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula".
