DHS: We Love Wall. Wall Good. Building Wall Quickly

  • A serious man in a heavy coat and hat

President Donald Trump on Thursday claimed that Mexico will pay for his proposed wall on the southwest border because the money saved in a new trade deal will cover the costs.

Clearly, the border wall won't stop all illegal immigration, but it certainly serves as an enormous physical deterrent to those who want to enter illegally, while also protecting the lives of the Border Patrol agents who guard it. In addition, Hoagland said he could not see a scenario under which the USMCA would "save" taxpayer money, as Trump asserted in his Twitter post.

Pelosi said "the American people are still paying the price" if new revenue from Trump's trade deal went to the wall.

"Prior to President Trump taking office, we have never built wall that high", the press release added.

Trump's highly questionable assertion, in a morning tweet, comes as he is lobbying Congress for $5 billion to help fund construction of the wall and threatening a partial government shutdown if he does not get his way.

Michael Matera, an economist and diplomatic analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says nothing in the USMCA (which is largely a continuation of NAFTA) indicates Mexico is picking up the $25 billion price tag for USA taxpayers - directly or indirectly.

"In respectful and friendly terms, we spoke about the migration issue and the possibility of implementing a joint program of development and job creation in Central America and our country", Lopez Obrador wrote in his Twitter account.

That's a reference to Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, who met with Trump Tuesday. But neither the White House nor the Mexicans mentioned any discussion of the border wall in readouts of the call.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told "Fox & Friends" Wednesday it appears no Americans were killed or injured in the attack.

Genaro Lopez said the caravan leaders also presented another letter to Trump demanding that he "extradite" Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez on unspecified charges that appeared loosely related to hurting the nation's economy.

"He invited me. I'm also able to go to Washington, but I think that both for him and for us there must be a reason and I think the most important thing would be to sign this agreement or meet with that objective", said Lopez Obrador.
