A team of astronomers has discovered the most extreme trans-Neptunian object in the outer reaches of the Solar System. Or to put it in Big Lebowski terms: "It's far out, man; far f%^#ing out".

Recorded in the catalogue of solar system objects as ' 2018 VG18', based on the timing of its discovery, the astronomers who spotted it ended up giving it a nickname - ' Farout'.

Farout's obvious moniker comes from the fact that it's over three and a half times more distant from us than Pluto.

This animation is composed of the two "discovery images" of 2018 VG18 "Farout", taken an hour apart from the Subaru Telescope, on November 10, 2018.

This distant body is so far away that experts believe it takes over 1,000 years to complete one orbit of the sun.

Planet X's existence has been inferred because of a pattern of eccentricities seen in the orbits of other objects on the solar system's edge.

A USA woman studying in the Netherlands was stabbed to death in her apartment on Wednesday police told The Washington Post . Papenheim, who often returned home for visits, loved music and was a skilled drummer, the station reported .

"Farout" (pronounced far-out) is about 120 astronomical units away - that's 120 times the distance between Earth and the sun, or 18 billion kilometres (11 billion miles.) The previous record-holder was the dwarf planet Eris at 96 astronomical units. Neptune is 30 astronomical units away, or 2.8 billion miles, and Pluto, now on the outward leg of its orbit, is 34.5 astronomical units, or 3.2 billion miles from the sun. (It takes multiple nights of observing to accurately determine an object's distance.) 2018 VG18 was seen for the second time in early December at the Magellan telescope at Carnegie's Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. "If its orbit never brings it into the giant planet region in our Solar System, then it becomes a big question of how it got out there".

Douglas Vakoch, president of METI International, told GeekWire in an email that the discovery of Farout proves the value of the hunt for Planet X.

'But it was found in a similar location on the sky to the other known extreme solar system objects, suggesting it might have the same type of orbit that a lot of them do. They also suggest that the planet is roughly spherical and is about 500km in diameter.

Its brightness suggests that it is about 300 miles in diameter; it's pretty pinkish hue is likely due to its ice-rich nature.

"This discovery is truly an global achievement in research using telescopes located in Hawaii and Chile, operated by Japan, as well as by a consortium of research institutions and universities in the United States", Trujillo said in a statement. They nicknamed it Goblin, because Halloween was approaching, and its orbit provided further evidence that Planet Nine may indeed exist.

"With new wide-field digital cameras on some of the world's largest telescopes, we are finally exploring our solar system's fringes far beyond Pluto", he said. "Planet X is also likely even further away, at a few hundred AU".
