The best overall diet in the 2019 U.S. News & World Report annual rankings is the perennial favorite - the Mediterranean diet, which focuses on produce, especially berries, whole grains, nuts and other healthy fats like olive oil and fish - salmon being a nutrient-loaded favorite. What they found is that there's one that stands out above the rest for being easy to follow, safe, nutritious, effective for weight loss, and great for preventing lifestyle-related diseases like heart disease and diabetes. For 2019, the Mediterranean diet took home the top award.

The report also listed diets that are best for fast weight loss.
