Democrats vote to delay passage of Israel bill until shutdown ends

Three weeks into a government shutdown that has 800,000 government workers out of work and without paychecks, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Democrat of NY, said his caucus will not vote in favor of any bills until the crisis passes. One of those bills would provide ample margin for state and local governments to curtail their business with those who actively support boycotts of Israel.

Punishment aimed at companies that choose to boycott Israel can also sweep up individual American citizens in its punitive net because individual contractors often work for state or local governments under the auspices of a sole proprietorship or some other business entity.

On the Senate floor, the Kentucky lawmaker said Democrats are hypocritical for their stance on border security, and claimed they are acting with political spite.

The bill at first had widespread support, but Democrats are split over Florida Republican Sen. "There's an opportunity for every American to see who wants government open, and our responsibility is not to do what the president of the United States tells us to do". "Senate Republicans should instead bring to the floor the House-passed bills to reopen the government", the aide said.

Prominent Senator Diane Feinstein voiced concern Tuesday over legislation that seeks to counter the global Boycott, Divest and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, Anadolu reports.

As Feinstein noted, she is an Israel supporter and a Jewish-American, which makes her statement all the more important-it implicitly hits at the cheap smear that any criticism of Israel is also anti-Semitic.

Denver Broncos go with Vic Fangio as head coach
Fangio, 60, is the architect of the league's No. 1 scoring defense in 2018 but has never been a head coach on any level. The Broncos went 11-21 with their last defensive-minded coach that had no previous head-coaching experience.

A short while later, the House voted 240-188 to pass a standalone $23.7 billion fiscal 2019 Financial Services spending bill, less than a week after the Democrat-controlled chamber passed the measure as part of a six-bill spending package that has not been taken up by the GOP-controlled Senate.

Ahead of the scheduled vote, MoveOn.org, Indivisible, the AFL-CIO and other progressive groups are calling on the public to flood their senators' phone lines and urge them to oppose Tuesday's motion to proceed, as well as any other measures unrelated to solving the ongoing government shutdown. "We've never had a better ally". All Democrats voted for the legislation.

The shift toward a more confrontational strategy comes as the Trump administration and congressional Democratic leaders made little headway toward resolving the shutdown that has shuttered key government functions in the areas of taxes, housing policies and patrolling national parks.

Tlaib shared Sanders' comments and added, "they forgot what country they represent".

Senator Bob Menendez, a Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said the bill "will come back and it will have very strong bipartisan support".

"This is the mentality of these people: They hate Israel", she says bluntly. That means that if enough senators stick together, they hold up legislation until the government reopens. Several states are facing lawsuits after taking action against workers supporting BDS boycotts of Israel.
