"If you are so confident in your deal, call that election, and let the people decide".

"Labour will table a motion of no confidence in the government at the moment we judge it to have the best chance of success", Corbyn said.

The Conservative MP Mark Francois, a vice-chair of the pro-Brexit European Research Group, said: "I have never known any occasion where the Speaker has overruled a motion of the House of Commons ... why are you overriding a motion of the house?"

The backstop, which would only come into force if no agreement on trade was reached during the transition period, would see Northern Ireland tied to some of the EU's rules.

May's de-facto deputy cautioned lawmakers that it was a delusion to think the government would be able to negotiate a new divorce deal with the European Union if parliament voted down her deal.

He added: "Until I hear categorically that after Labour wins a general election that we will have a general election immediately because that is what needs to happen".

"I would suggest to some of my honourable friends - the ones that are getting somewhat overexcited - that perhaps they should don a yellow jacket and go outside", he said.

But Bercow, who won equally noisy support from Labour MPs and some remain-minded Conservatives, insisted that he could make the decision and that he would side with the interests of parliament over the executive.

But decision to allow the vote on the amendment enraged chief whip Mr Smith.

But the Labour leader will describe an election as "not only the most practical option, it is also the most democratic option".

John Bercow seized control of the Brexit process from Theresa May and handed it to MPs as the Prime Minister suffered her second humiliating Commons defeat in as many days.

"It's already been quite clearly and emphatically rejected by the TUC and leading trade unions".

They're frustrated that Mr Corbyn, a longtime eurosceptic who voted for Remain in the 2016 referendum, has refused to push for a new vote, even as polling shows the majority of Labour voters support one.

Wednesday's decision came as MPs began five days of debate on May's deal and is the latest example of legislators seeking to tie the government's hands over Brexit, with less than three months to go before the United Kingdom leaves the European Union on March 29.

"If a general election can not be secured, then we will keep all options on the table, including the option of campaigning for a public vote", Corbyn said in a speech in northern England. Under party policy agreed a year ago, if Mrs May refuses to call an election, Labour may then pivot to pushing for a second referendum.

"I don't think the British public are served by fantasies about magical, alternative deals that are somehow going to spring out of a cupboard in Brussels", Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington told BBC radio.

Bercow provoked fury from the Tory benches for selecting the amendment, which government sources contended went against the advice of the House of Commons.

Bercow said he had made an "honest judgement" after consulting his clerks and said that if people wanted to vote against the amendment they could. "That is how we can help to heal the referendum's deep divisions".

The government has lost two Brexit votes in two days. Responding to the vote, Brexit minister Stephen Barclay told parliament it was the government's intention to act quickly if May's Brexit plan was rejected on Tuesday.

"The Labour MPs claimed that 40 to 80 of their colleagues could eventually follow suit, after several rounds of voting", says Elliot.
