  • Tulsi Gabbard announces she will run for president in 2020

Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii) said Friday that she will run for president in 2020.

He asked her if she's going to run, and she responded, "I have made a decision to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week".

"I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", Gabbard, a liberal 37-year-old Iraq War veteran as well as the first Hindu and first Samoan-American elected to the US Congress, told CNN.

She also met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a meeting she claimed was "important" to "achieve peace" for the Syrian people.

She said she met with him to show that US can "truly care about the Syrian people" with the hope of achieving peace.

More recently, Gabbard stirred controversy among fellow Democrats when she issued a statement accusing some of them of "religious bigotry" for questioning whether a judicial nominee's membership in a Catholic fraternal organization would affect his ability to apply the law. Bernie Sanders' highest-profile supporters, aligning herself with his populist economic message.

"There are a lot of reasons for me to make this decision", Gabbard told the broadcaster.

Tulsi, who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said her campaign platform will address health care, climate change, and criminal justice reform. So if you were thinking Gabbard was looking for a VP slot on the Kamala Harris ticket, that's probably out now.

"I think that after seeing [Gabbard's] continued lack of fighting for human and civil rights, that this was - for our members across the state - enough was enough", he said.

Ms Gabbard was one of the most prominent lawmakers to back Sanders over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary.

Gabbard, 37, enters what's likely to be a crowded Democratic field.

The Democratic Party Of Hawai'i Chair Keali'i Lopez has already issued a statement supporting Rep. Gabbard's presidential announcement.

Gabbard has attracted significant criticism for her positions on Syria, particularly on Assad.

She was condemned by Democrats and Republicans alike, as the prevailing narrative in the U.S. is that the Syrian president is a war criminal because he purportedly used chemical weapons against civilians.

But asked whether Gabbard's rebuke would affect their relationship, Hirono told Hawaii News Now she "works well" with "Republicans" and said she would "certainly" welcome opportunities to work with Gabbard.

Rania Batrice, who was a deputy campaign manager for Bernie Sanders in 2016 and is now a top aide to Gabbard, will be the campaign manager, Batrice says.
