  • Woman in vegetative state gives birth at Hacienda Healthcare in Phoenix

Azfamily.com first reported that the woman, in a vegetative state after a near-drowning, delivered a baby on 29 December.

A male patient complained Hacienda HealthCare staff walked in on him while he was trying to shower with assistance in December 2017.

Police are now investigating the case as a potential sexual assault with an anonymous source telling the outlet that staff at the facility did not know the woman was pregnant.

A Hacienda spokesperson said the facility was assisting with law enforcement and regulatory agencies on the "unprecedented matter" as well as reviewing its own "processes, protocols, and people".

There is also "increased monitoring of the patient care areas, and increased security measures with respect to visitors at the facility". the health department said.

The Phoenix Police Department and the Arizona Department of Health Services are conducting a joint investigation into the sexual assault.

Gary Orman, the executive vice president of the company's board, said it would "accept nothing less than a full accounting of this absolutely horrifying situation".

In a statement released to PEOPLE on Friday, Hacienda HealthCare spokesman David Leibowitz said the organisation, which runs the facility, was cooperating with authorities, but declined to divulge the exact nature of the underlying incident.

SAHRC spokesperson Gail Smith said the commission would work closely with the department to investigate the allegations. One white parent said: "If you are not happy here‚ take your child to another school‚ nobody is forcing you".

The birth at Hacienda de Los Angeles, a Hacienda HealthCare facility in Phoenix took staff members by surprise. It is noted that the board of directors unanimously accepted his resignation.

The office of Arizona's governor has described the situation as "deeply troubling".

"And we will do everything in our power to ensure the safety of every single one of our patients and our employees".

Hacienda almost lost its Medicare funding in December 2013 after Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) found at least one staff member was abusive to multiple patients while several staff members were deficient in reporting patient allegations of abuse by staff.

Martin Solomon, a personal injury attorney in Phoenix whose clients are mostly adult victims of abuse and neglect, said any lawyer representing the woman should call for all pertinent medical records, a list of current and former employees and any past litigation involving Hacienda.

Meanwhile, a state lawmaker is considering legislation to protect patients living at long-term healthcare facilities from abuse. "I haven't been able to sleep well at night because of what occurred here", a mother, Angela Gomez, told CBS.

"I think when you've had somebody who's had multiple allegations from different parties, there has to be some way to track that", McFadden said.

"We don't know who this person is yet".
