Almost one year after the tragic Parkland massacre, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel was officially dismissed from his job on Friday. "I served the county honorably", Israel said Friday. Ron DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody and four staffers experienced "mechanical issues" and made a pit stop in St. Petersburg on Friday as the new governor made his way to Fort Lauderdale. He failed to protect Floridians and visitors during the tragic Fort Lauderdale International Airport shooting in 2017.

The order, dubbed "Achieving More Now for Florida's Environment", promises participation in the Florida Wildlife Commission's Harmful Algae Bloom Task Force to expedite the study of red tide's causes and impacts on the environment and human health, and instructs the South Florida Water Management District to begin the next phase of the Everglades Agricultural Area Storage Reservoir Project and for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to approve the project in line with the state's schedule. He failed in his duties to keep our families and children safe during the devastating shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018. The sheriff said then the vote reflected only "a small number" of BSO employees and the union representing the vast majority of employees "solidly supports the leadership of this agency".

One certainty, Kaplan said - Israel has every intention of running for election in 2020.

Israel plans to contest the suspension, according to the Associated Press. If Israel challenges the suspension, the state Senate would hold a trial and could either fire or reinstate him. Israel had been sheriff six years. I know that Scott Israel, he's tried to mask his incompetency previously by calling out the NRA or calling out other individuals, but you know, Martha, this is not about the NRA. It was reported in the wake of the shooting that one of Israel's deputies, Scot Peterson, did not enter the school as the massacre took place.

"Sheriff Israel has been twice elected by Broward County residents", said Maj.

But Israel, clad in a suit and tie rather than his usual sheriff's uniform, said DeSantis' actions were motivated by politics, not facts.

In the weeks following the shooting, Israel argued that he had "given unbelievable leadership" and placed blame on his deputies.

Commissioners also concluded that the department's active shooter training had not been effective.

DeSantis earlier Friday removed Okaloosa County Superintendent of Schools Mary Beth Jackson from her position, citing what he described as "dereliction of duty" laid out in "scathing" grand jury reports. "I thank Governor Ron DeSantis for this honor and I commit to faithfully fulfilling my duties to this office".

Seventeen people died on the day of the massacre. Violent crime went down, and he easily won re-election in 2016 to oversee the county's 2,800 deputies. Even before a state fact-finding commission empaneled to review the tragedy released its findings, DeSantis was criticizing Israel on the campaign trail.

Israel has resisted calls for his resignation, including from some parents whose children were victims of the Parkland school shooting.
