Former Leeds and South African striker Phil Masinga dies aged 49

Masinga played for Leeds between 1994 and 1996 and also had spells at St Gallen in Switzerland and Italian clubs Salernitana and Bari.

Leeds United tweeted soon after the passing on of the football legend: "It is with great sadness that the club has learnt of former striker Phil Masinga's passing".

No further details have been announced regarding the circumstances of his death.

Masinga was hospitalized in December past year after suffering from an "undisclosed illness", and was reportedly recovering at the Tshepong Hospital but was reportedly later moved to Parktown in Johannesburg.

He was signed for Leeds by then manager Howard Wilkinson at the same time as his compatriot Lucas Radebe.

"Sad day for South African football", South African Football Association president Danny Jordan said in a post on the social media platform.

Soccer Laduma sends their deepest condolences to family and friends of the late Masinga.

"I am really gutted".

And he earned his place in South African history by scoring the decisive goal against DR Congo which secured qualification for the World Cup in France in 1998. "May his soul rest in peace".
