  • Police seek staff DNA over vegetative woman's baby

A doctor examined an Arizona woman in a vegetative state almost nine months before she gave birth but did not find that she was pregnant, and a medical expert said Thursday that it's possible she displayed no outward signs that workers who cared for her every day would have noticed either.

According to AP News, police are now investigating this as sexual assault and are in the midst of collecting DNA samples from all of the facility's male employees.

An attorney representing the family of a comatose woman who has been living at a private care facility in Phoenix says she gave birth to a boy.

In addition, the records reveal that the patient's last doctor's examination took place more than eight months prior to the December 29 birth, which according to Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson "took everyone [at the facility] by surprise".

The baby and mother were transported to a local hospital where both are recovering.

Hacienda HealthCare owns the care facility and said it welcomed DNA testing of its male workers.

Hacienda CEO Bill Timmons on Monday after 28 years at the facility, which was rated "much below average" on the Medicare website and almost had its government funding revoked after a 2013 investigation found at least one staff member was making inappropriate sexual comments to patients and staff were deficient in reporting patient abuse complaints.

In a separate development, the San Carlos Apache Tribe said in a statement Tuesday that the woman at the center of the case is an "enrolled member" of the tribe. "It is my hope that justice will be served", the tribe chairman told CBS.

A lawyer for the woman's family said they were outraged at the "neglect of their daughter".

He said: "I am led to believe that this [pregnancy] came to light when the baby was born".

CNN affiliate KPHO/KTVK has reported the woman has been in a vegetative state for 14 years, quoting a source familiar with the situation.

We know that sexual assault and rape are less about sex than they are predation, which is one reason assailants target the vulnerable - children, women under the influence of drugs or alcohol, people with disabilities.

New details about the woman in a coma who gave birth have been revealed in court documents from 2009.

On its website, Hacienda describes itself as "Arizona's leading provider of specialized health care services for medically fragile and chronically ill infants, children, teens, and young adults as well as those with intellectual and developmental disabilities".

"A good way to understand it is that really, the baby's going to continue to grow even at the expense of the mum's nutrition", Huls said.

"None of the staff were aware that she was pregnant until she was pretty much giving birth", a source told KPHO.

In the U.S. nursing home Hacienda HealthCare in Phoenix has brought to the end of December, the patient is a child.

"In a statement, board member Gary Orman said: "[We] will accept nothing less than a full accounting of this absolutely horrifying situation".

Hacienda's CEO Bill Timmons stepped down earlier this week.

Police have declined to comment on the investigation.
