The injured passengers have been hospitalized and five of them, including two foreigners, are now in a critical condition.

The passengers included tourists from the UK, France, the Netherlands, Mexico and Canada.

According to reports from Cuba, the driver, who clearly was not killed in the crash, said he lost control of the bus while on a wet and winding highway.

Cuba's roads are notoriously poor with many of them badly-lit and poorly maintained, especially in that region of the country, our correspondent adds.

In 2018, there were 11,187 accidents resulting in 750 deaths nad 7,999 injuries, and Thursday's crash was the fourth major bus accident of the month. Our thoughts are with all those injured and the loved ones of those who died in this tragic crash.
