U.S. government shutdown becomes longest in history

Democratic lawmakers don't want to include Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)-the protections for illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children-in negotiations with the White House on ending the partial government shutdown, President Donald Trump said in a Twitter post dated January 13.

In an appearance on "Fox News Sunday", Graham maintained that Trump is not going to give up on his demand for more than $5 billion in funding for a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border.

Mr. Graham said lawmakers could continue to negotiate and hopefully reach a deal before the president takes such an enormous step.

In two of his tweets Saturday, Trump pushed back on a media report that his White House was "chaotic" with no plan or strategy to end the shutdown.

Congress says all affected federal workers will get back pay as soon as the shutdown is over, but that brings little assurance to those who have immediate expenses and little or no savings in case of an emergency. Another Republican, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Trump is "willing to meet in the middle" to end a partial USA government shutdown, now at a record 23rd day.

On Sunday, Graham told Fox New's Wallace that the administration wants to make a deal but Democrats refuse the any deal that includes the wall. "That's why I'm depressed".

Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., called Graham's idea for a brief reopening of the government a "great place to start".

"Put an end to the shutdown and put everything on the table", Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, said on ABC's "This Week" show.

Democrats have refused to approve legislation to fund Trump's long-promised border wall, which eventually led to the partial government shutdown that recently entered its fourth week. "There's so much. And all I'm saying is that we've got to hit the ground, not running, but flying".

First, it would allow him to claim that he was the one to act to reopen the government.

But on Sunday Mr Trump was continuing to blame his opponents for the standoff. While they will be paid once the shutdown ends, many say they will struggle to pay bills in the meantime.

Earlier on Friday, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives voted 240-179 to restore funding for the Interior Department and the Environmental Protection Agency, two of the agencies that have been shuttered since December 22.

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana has floated a plan for Trump to tap monies seized from drug cartels to pay for the construction of a border wall.

There's good news for Republicans, though, looking to obtain some sort of immigration reform compromise in ongoing budget negotiations: most wall supporters polled by the Washington Post want Republicans - and especially President Trump - to stand firm on making funding for the border wall part of the final budget package. Some employees, such as air traffic controllers and government airport security workers, are working without pay. "Think? Did I say think?" she said. A person familiar with White House thinking said that in meetings this past week, the message was that the administration is in no rush and wants to consider various options.

But during a photo op in Texas Thursday, Trump indicated a willingness to make a deal on DACA "simultaneously" with a deal on wall funding.
