The gentleman had been injecting himself with a "dose of semen for 18 consecutive months using a hypodermic needle which had been purchased online".

The 33-year-old man developed a cure for his chronic back pain. A search of more eclectic internet sites and forums found no other documentation of semen injection for back pain treatment or other uses.

The man devised the "cure" independent of medical advice and ended up developing an abscess on his right arm as a result of making the intravenous semen injections over an 18-month period.

However his home medicine ideas causing him to develop cellulitis, a bacterial infection of the skin - and definitely didn't help with his bad back.

However, the "doses" caused a red rash on his right upper arm.

The journal reports that this is believed to be the first reported medical case of the injection of semen for such a goal, and went on to say that even in research of "more eclectic internet sites", they could not find any cases of human injection of semen.

The patient had presented in hospital complaining of sudden and severe lower-back pain.

An X-ray ruled out any objects in the man's forearm but did show a small "local collection" of where the semen had been pooled.

The unique case is thought to be the first in the world, with Dr Dunne writing that no studies of injecting semen into human bodies have ever been carried out.

The area around where he had been injecting himself had become swollen as soft tissue had become inflamed with his injections due to failed intravenous injections attempts. Doctors immediately hospitalized the patient, treating him with intravenous antimicrobial therapy.

After further investigating the case studies and other reports on this story, the exact rationale behind this weird DIY-treatment couldn't be determined.

"The case also demonstrates the risks involved with medical experimentation prior to extensive clinical research", Dunn wrote.
