'Metroid Prime 4' development restarts after two years

Nintendo just released a video featuring Shinya Takahashi explaining the progress, or lack thereof, on Metroid Prime 4, including their plans to restart the process over.

The involvement of Retro Studios is curious, given that the team has been said to have been working on a new game since finishing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, though Khan on Twitter speculated that this project has either been completed or canceled.

The long-in-development fourth entry in the Prime series has had some intense problems, and progress updates from Nintendo have been scarce since the game was first announced.

Nintendo announced some disappointing news this morning: it will completely restart development on Metroid Prime 4 this month after the current version of the game "failed to meet its expectations".

Metroid Prime 4 is headed back to the drawing board. Eurogamer dug into the Bandai Namco Studios Singapore staff member profiles for more clues, which eventually pointed the publication to a lead designer that was apparently assigned to an "unannounced IP (first person shooter/adventure exclusive to the Nintendo Switch)". "In order to keep the new Metroid Prime game up to the lauded efforts of the past, it seems that Nintendo is going to make fans wait - possibly a long time, since two gaming console generations have already passed since the third game". The hiccup will delay the game's launch by what could be a couple of years, pushing the title much later into the Switch's lifespan than Nintendo initially hoped for.

"We did not make this decision lightly", Takahashi said.

It's been quite a while since we last heard anything regarding Metroid Prime 4, but today, Nintendo provided an update on the status of the game. Sure, delays are never fun, but if it means a better game as a result, then I'm all for it.
