Thousands of people cheered on January 27 as Democratic Senator Kamala Harris formally kicked off her 2020 presidential bid on Sunday in Oakland, California, her hometown.
DeJear was Iowa's first African American to win a primary for statewide office previous year, but lost in her attempt to unseat Iowa's Republican secretary of state.
Harris spoke of the "arrogance of power" demonstrated by Trump and his administration, and warned that "the American dream and our American democracy are under attack and on the line like never before".
During her Iowa visit, some of Warren's stops took her to conservative parts of the state, as she sought to prove her comfort outside urban America and show stamina for what promises to be a long slog.
She still has a long road ahead of her, with nearly two years to go until the 2020 election, but her supporters say she can not afford to take her foot off the pedal.
But her record has also caused controversy among progressives.
As she highlighted how her parents met during the civil rights movement, Harris defended her record as a prosecutor and as California's attorney general, which some liberals have criticized as being too tough on minorities. She paid a political price for her disruption, receiving nearly no support from law enforcement groups during her attorney general run in 2010. However, a ghost from her past may be coming back to haunt her.
In the years before she married Doug, she dated people.
Since reclaiming the majority in the House in November, Democrats have vowed to prioritize the passage of a universal-background-check bill - legislation that Speaker Nancy Pelosi believes is more politically feasible in the current climate than an assault-weapons ban.
The rumor they're going with is that Harris was his mistress.
Fernando Alonso secures Daytona 24 Hours victory
The race was halted with Alonso's vehicle ahead of USA racer Eric Curran and Brazilian drivers Nasr and Pipo Derani. In 2017, Alonso started fifth and led 27 laps before mechanical trouble left him with a 24th-place showing.
"I have also worked my whole career to reform the criminal justice system, understanding, to your point, that it is deeply flawed".
Ms Harris's campaign is expected to highlight her career as a prosecutor. Barack Obama pulled off the primary upset of Hillary Clinton in 2008 by turning out the black vote, especially in the southern states of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, where Black voters account for about half the Democratic electorate. Bernie Sanders in 2017 provided a pathway to transition workers out of the sector - it is unlikely to account for every worker in the market.
The visceral reaction to her words, with crowd members cheering and welling up, has fired her into the lead as one of the Democrats with the potential to unseat Trump in what will be one of the fiercest presidential races in history. Recent polls show those three men would enter the race at or near the top of a growing Democratic field.
"No other candidate has even tried to put together a big outdoor rally like that", he said.
Historically, presidential elections are won by providing the electorate with one of two things: fear or hope. It might be the flawless antidote to the current administration's daily dose of fear mongering.
"That's not correct. That's not American", Schultz said in reference to Medicare for All.
Harris rarely mentioned Trump by name, but he was clearly a target.
"We must answer a fundamental question: Who are we?" she said.
Michael Ahrens, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee, called it "fitting" that Harris chose "the most liberal district in deep-blue California to launch her campaign".
