The current measles outbreak in Clark County and one diagnosed case in King County are examples of why the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) Vaccine is a crucial requirement. Although Chelan and Douglas Counties do not now have a confirmed case of measles, public health officials are working closely with school districts and healthcare providers to ensure students and staff are up to-date on their vaccines. There are four cases with unverified vaccination records, and 37 people who are unimmunized.

"What a lot of people don't realize is that it's one of the most contagious viruses we've ever known". Unvaccinated people are at a much higher risk of contracting measles if they come into contact with someone who is contagious.

We need most people in the population to be vaccinated in order to maintain our "herd immunity". "Thirteen additional suspected cases were reported Wednesday, and some of those will likely be confirmed", the AP reported.

"The measles vaccine isn't ideal, but one dose is 93 percent effective at preventing illness", Melnick said. The vaccine is very effective against measles.

Oregon's governor had some choice words about the ongoing measles outbreak in the Portland region when she spoke at a forum in Bend on Friday.

So, how is it that a disease that's been declared eradicated in the u.S. "The state senator (Elizabeth Steiner Hayward) who attempted to strengthen our vaccination rates was literally bogged down by avid parents".

The CDC also says 81 people brought measles into the US from other countries last year-the greatest number of imported cases since the measles was eliminated from the U.S.in 2000.

Measles symptoms include a fever, rash, cough, conjunctivitis (red watery eyes) or a runny nose. Vaccination is a fool-proof method to curb the spread of measles. In some people, especially people who have chronic medical problems, are pregnant, or are malnourished, measles also leads to serious problems such as pneumonia, brain damage, blindness, deafness, and death. "And a few days after that, you get that famous rash", explained Alok Patel, MD, a pediatrician at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. After someone is exposed to measles, illness develops in about one to three weeks.
