  • Foxconn recommits to $10B Wisconsin plant after call from Trump

The "campus will serve both as an advanced manufacturing facility as well as a hub of high technology innovation for the region", it stated.

Vos and Fitzgerald were referring to the state's 15-year deal that provides Foxconn with roughly $2.85 billion if the company meets capital investment and job creation goals.

According to a Reuters report earlier this week, Gou's special assistant Louis Woo (胡國輝) said the plan was revised in light of the steep cost of making advanced TV screens in the us, where labor expenses are comparatively high.

Trump responded to the news on February 1, confirming that he'd spoken with Terry Gou, the company's founder and chairman. Evers, Wisconsin's current governor who used Walker's support for Foxconn against him in the race, was a critic of the project during the campaign but has said this week he's working closely with Foxconn on the project.

"Great news on Foxconn in Wisconsin after my conversation with Terry Gou!" he said on Twitter.

The decision is also based on a recent comprehensive and systematic evaluation to help determine the best fit for Foxconn's Wisconsin project among TFT (Thin Film Transistor) technologies, according to the statement.

After speaking with Donald Trump, Terry Gou, the Taiwanese company's chairman, said Foxconn would now move "forward with our planned construction of a Gen 6 fab facility", which is a type of plant that produces liquid crystal displays.

The company previously said the changing global economic climate - roiled by Trump's trade war with China where Foxconn has most of its assembly lines - prompted it to revise its original plans. But this week, even that was thrown into question with Foxconn executive Louis Woo said it couldn't compete in the television screen market and would not be making LCD panels in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin's new Democratic governor criticized the company Friday for its flip-flopping.

On Wednesday, Foxconn said that it was refocusing on research and development rather than manufacturing, which means it will employ scientists and developers, rather than blue collar workers as originally promised.

Foxconn says after productive discussions with the White House, and a personal conversation between Trump and Foxconn chairman Terry Gou, it plans to proceed with the smaller manufacturing facility.

The company, which has invested about $200m in the schemes so far, may also change the function of the United States plant away from display manufacturing and towards a research and development hub, Nikkei Asian Review reported yesterday.

MSNBC's Chris Hayes weighed in on the Foxconn damage control, sarcastically tweeting, "They are also announcing a bridge for sale".

Other costs to taxpayers are harder to quantify, said Steven Deller, an economist at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

"I'm comfortable that they're still committed to the state", Evers told reporters Friday, according to The Cap Times.
