Today (4 February) marks World Cancer Day, an initiative created to increase general awareness and raise funds for research into prevention, treatment and cure of this disease.

That's according to the Central East Regional Cancer Program, who in partnership with Cancer Care Ontario and Lakeridge Health have developed a program so more health care providers, including nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and midwives will have training to provide Pap tests to women at local health centres.

A new 3-year campaign started under the slogan: "I am and I will be", reported NOVA TV. Every Malaysian has the power to reduce the effects of cancer for themselves, their beloved ones and communities. Prior to 2016, the campaign themes included "Not Beyond Us" and "Debunk the Myths". Even relatively low levels of regular alcohol consumption can increase the risk. In its recently released statistics, World Health Organization claimed that 17 people die every minute from cancer. Founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), the day is set aside to raise awareness about the disease and also highlight preventive as well as treatment measures. It is in the same cancer-causing category as tobacco and asbestos.

World Cancer Day is a global initiative to unite communities across the world in the war against cancer.

While Shaukat Khanum hospital is committed to provide best cancer care facilities to every citizen, irrespective of their ability to pay, it is also imperative to spread awareness about the disease.

This is followed by breast cancer at 1,131 cases, colorectum cancer (cancers of the rectum and the colon) at 838 cases, stomach cancer at 803, and liver cancer with 737 new cases.

Five million of those cases could have been found sooner with early detection, screening and diagnosis.

"Cancer can be cured completely in our country". However, it warned that national cancer control plans should be goal-oriented, realistic, carefully prepared and appropriately funded through a participatory process in order to be effectively implemented.

Women with postpartum breast cancer showed a higher presence of cancer in their lymph nodes and higher cancer invasion of the lymphovascular system. All key stakeholders should be involved early in the planning stages, and national leadership is needed throughout the process.

Although awareness about diseases such as cancer shouldn't be confined to just one day out of 365, events like World Cancer Day are a great opportunity for advisers to kickstart what can often be a hard conversation with clients who may not have protection in place. Fortunately, this is the easiest gynaecological Cancer to be prevented through screening and early vaccination. That includes going beyond the fanfare of a launch.
